Louisianians KNOW those levees are vulnerable. There is fear every time the Mississippi reaches a critical floodstage - there are gates that can be opened, allowing some of the water to flow either through the Atchafalaya Spillway, or through Lake Ponchartrain. This takes pressure off the river levees. The Lake Ponchartrain levees were breached in 1995 after torrential rains. It isn't as if this is unheard of.

God, I hope someone refutes this! They must.

I'm in Ohio and even I knew about the levees in New Orleans. On Saturday and Sunday, most of what I saw on TV was about the worry of the levees being breached when flooding happened!!

I hope the average person doesn't fall for this shit again!

I just saw a bit of it the other night. The show said a direct hit could kill 40,000 to 60,000 people. Said the city could NOT be evacuated in time. Too many people with no means (money/method) to leave.

But in all fairness to the locals and the state, that type of project could only be financed to a feasible extent by the federal government, without the state and local governments having to increase revenue (taxes) or cut programs.
