Sam Eisele, owner of a Marathon station in Portage County, was charging $2.99 a gallon Wednesday -- a dime less than his competitors with digital pumps up and down the street because that's the most his mechanical pumps with the rolling numbers would let him...

Hard as it may be to believe, pumps manufactured about 20 years ago were made to go no higher than $1.99 a gallon. The industry thought that was plenty high enough...

Benford of Ark Petroleum Products said older pumps are facing other problems. Some nationwide are malfunctioning because the internal gears - even upgraded - must work too hard to keep up with high gas prices. Gas flows into your tank at the same speed, but the dials and gears must spin faster to keep up.

"This stuff was never really intended to go that fast," Benford said. "They're spinning so fast, it's spinning the guts out of it."
