The ingredients for a hurricane include a pre-existing weather disturbance, warm tropical oceans, moisture, and relatively light winds aloft. If the right conditions persist long enough, they can combine to produce the violent winds, incredible waves, torrential rains, and floods we associate with this phenomenon.

1. I always liked the legend that hurricanes are paybacks for slavery

Most hurricanes start off the coast of Africa which ironically was where we got the bulk of the slaves we drug over to america back pre-civil war. I once read a rant that hurricanes were Africa's way of punishing us for what we did to Africa.

That's a legend that I can live with!
