The gas siphoners are back... time to get a locking gas cap....
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 08:53 AM by hlthe2b
Just a bit of advice, especially for our younger DUers, who don't remember the long lines and shortages after the Iranian 0il embargo.

My car (like all newer cars with the hatch that opens from the inside and the internal cap that is hidden within) has been the focus of those trying to siphon gas three days in a row (Denver) while parked in my driveway. Yes, they can open those hatches from the outside, even without a lever. The first day they probably got 1/8 tank, were foiled, I guess, the second. It was still full yesterday, so someone must have again scared them off. Each day, the external hatch door was flapping open, so I know they tried.

Auto parts stores can supply a locking gas cap. They will have to look up your car model to be sure it fits. I'd highly suggest this to most DUers living in major cities, but possibly everywhere given the circumstances.

1. I thought about that last night...
after gas went from $2.58 to $3.19 per gallon in just over 24 hours. Will be heading to the auto parts store today or tomorrow.

2. We've always used them
One downside though, I've had my vehicle badly keyed a couple of times when someone has apparently pried the gas hatch door open and found the locking cap. (Hatch door broken, pry marks/scratches on locking gas cap). Guess this pissed the potential thieves off. Just a thought...

3. Honestly, I'd rather get a little keying, than
lose an antire tank of gas when things start getting really bad. Yeah, the paintjob will be a little bit dinged, but I'll still be able to get around. For a LITTLE while anyway.

4. I read somewhere
That they're not all that difficult to "remove" (emphasis on quotes)

Still better than nothing, I guess...

5. Probably not that difficult to remove
But when you're parked in a parking lot full of vehicles, I suppose most potential siphoners (is that a word?) would fairly quickly move on to a car without a locking cap.

6. If someone needs the gas more than I do...so be it.
I refuse to pit myself against my neighbor. I refuse to do these things. I will attempt to live in a free and honest society. I will help my neighbor. If they need the gas, it's theirs.
