What's happening in N.O. is republicanism at its core
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 09:39 AM by SoCalDem
No governmental "intervention" (to speak of)
People "managing on their own"
Taking "personal responsibility" for their own families
Making use of the "resources they can find on their own"
Gun "ownership" unrestricted
Capitalism is its raw form is going on, unregulated

what's their beef? It's what republicans are always talking about..

But if they even think there are gays-with-guns or possible abortions, they will really crack down

21. I heard that too, and about fell out of bed.
I could not believe my ears, but there must be "word going out" from "SOMEWHERE" to broadcast far and wide and repeatedly that corporate Amerika is donating beaucoup bucks for relief. Makes me sick!

Didn't W say it in his sorry-assed excuse for a "speech to the nation" yesterday, too? I thought I heard that, though it's very hard for me to listen to and look at him, ever. I do, but it takes a real effort on my part. (I figure if none of us will *watch* him, then no one is keeping an eye on him! And we won't know what he says or does except as the media TELL us about it. Besides, I do like seeing him cracking up.)

With all the looting happening in NOLA, and bad as that is, especially with the gun-toting thugs *shooting* at rescuers and relief workers, STILL I can't imagine anything as bad as the Corporate LOOTING that has been going on in this country ever since GWB took office -- and frankly EVERY time Repugs have been in power. You would think, as some have already said in several threads I've been reading, that the LEAST these bandits could do would be to donate in a major way toward this relief effort after such a catastrophic natural disaster as Katrina has been -- and continues to be.

But no actual figures I've heard as yet amount to a drop in the bucket compared to what SHOULD be offered from those who HAVE the wealth to share. It's shameful, disgraceful, disgusting.

I really appreciated the summing up of the "Republicanism" in the original post here. Very nicely done -- and right on the mark. Thanks for the succinct bullet list. If you don't mind, I would like to put it in a paragraph to forward to my email friends. May I do that? With proper credit given, of course!

7. gun-ownership and possession is legal, looting guns/shooting people is NOT
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 09:42 AM by puddycat
Why would you use your opposition to the 2nd amendment to try to illustrate some point about Republicanism? There are many Democrats who support the Constitutional right to possess guns. However the Constitution does not give anyone the right to indiscrimately fire those weapons, to loot those weapons, and to become a mob, no more than it allows people who happen to possess matches to burn down sports good stores they have just looted (see Yahoo.com photos today)

The criminals who are looting and shooting and destroying and burning need to be dealt with swiftly and surely. This is not a matter of what party or how far to the left or right we swing--its a matter of civilization itself.

13. I think it is a vision of the future though...
If you keep throwing away the middle class and pushing the lower class further and further down, eventually society will be pushed into the area of crime and desperation, just like we are seing here. Republicans should ask themselves if this is really their "rosy" vision of the future, where everyone "takes care of themselves" to the point that people have nothing left to lose and all become "looters" and "pillagers" to survive, and at some point start going after the wealthy too. About the only difference is that in the future the wealthy will have their own "castles" they can hide behind, instead of having their houses trashed. Oh wait, maybe that's applicable too. People will eventually start bombing these wealthy "castles" too with escalating forms of "terrorism".

And in the end, everyone loses, like people here. If we'd put a bit more money into shoring up the levees, just think of how much could have been saved compared to that cost. If that pattern is followed elsewhere (and it already is in many cases where federal funding hasn't shored up security or other infrastructure needs), we will pay more for it later and all be collectively worse off for it.

I don't think anyone here advocates complete lawlessness, etc. but we have to recognize that otherwise normal everyday working people can be turned into these "looting criminals" if put in the wrong circumstances that these Republicans dream of.

16. Exactly.. self-preservation always kicks in at some level
and it's a different level for different people.. there are surley some older people in N.O. who are quietly sitting in their apartments, hoping that someone will come for them..Perhaps someoen will, but will it be before they are dead?

18. Just call em one them evil Iraqis and it's free range
The US seems to have one of the most irresponsible persons there ever was in charge of a whole lot of people with way too many firearms and your are bagging on people who think there should be gun control. The BOYS have been arming themselves for years, and now they want to play with their TOYS and you don't get it.

The people who desire gun control will never take away any weapons, but the government will, so why do you come fight here with people who are only debating it? Maybe your afraid to confront the government (who do have lot's of guns)

...flew out of New Orleans to their Vacation Resort Home in Aspen two days before the Storm. They are Overinsured and will be at the front of the Line for the Government "Payouts". The Top 1% will make money off of their losses on the Gulf Coast.

How the Republican party EVER gets more than 1% of the VOTES is beyond me.

The Republican Ownership Society

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

28. As the situation worsens, particularly in New Orleans
I keep wondering if we're going to end up seeing mass graves.

The bodies aren't being collected now -- hell, they aren't even going in to get the LIVING!

So will we see mass graves eventually?

Think about it ... MASS GRAVES. What does THAT remind you of???

'Compassionate conservatism', anyone?

Those Louisiana and Deep Southern megachurches are just storming into action, btw...I see all those big volunteer teams of white Christians fanning out and helping their fellow man, reaching across race lines, volunteering their time and money and efforts, lowering prices to help the poorest refugees make it through in their time of need.

Oh wait, I'm not actually seeing any of that. I'm seeing helicopter shots of yahoos putting up the Stars And Stripes on a tree as if that was the truly important thing to do.
