4. They cherry-pick their science

Global-warming naysayers are oh-so-quick to point out we're entering a cyclical period of increased storm activity, but then immediately deny that increased water temperatures could create a devastating NEW level of activity. No, this was just business as usual, no cause for alarm. A few degrees difference was insignificant.

I've heard that argument for the last two years, then finally a new report admitted that oh gosh, it looks like increased water temperatures are having an effect, after all. A few degrees rise increases the energy of hurricanes significantly.

5. I want to point out...

as an avid environmentalist, that there is no (conclusive) proof going in either way, supporting or refuting global warming. What we do know is that it would take hundreds or thousands of years to really feel the effects of global warming.

That said, I don't know what to think about global warming. I do think we need to STRONGLY increase EPA restrictions, clean up the environment, stop the cutting-down of the rainforest, and protect plant and wildlife everywhere. Time will tell if our horrible treatment of the earth is causing it to warm up, or if it's natural warming and cooling cycles.

15. you are confusing two issues, and contradicting yourself

1. is global warming real
2. is global warming man-made or natural

When you say

You are in effect saying that global warming is indeed real, it's just not sure whether it's man-made or natural. There would be no need to wonder about it being man-made or natural, if there is no evidence of it happening in the first place.



Also, ice drillings on Greenland do show that significant changes in average global temperature can occur over the cause of decades rather then 100's or 1000's of years. And long term climate data does show an increase of about 1 degree average global temperature over the past 100 years or so.

16. let me clarify.

There is no proof about global warming/cooling. IF global warming is real, I can't say if it's man-made or natural.

As for temperature changes, please visit http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/station_data/ and look at the data. From 1880-2005, the DC station has recorded very little variation of temperatures- and that isn't taking into account the growth of the city (which gives off considerable heat).

Glaciers are retreating, the North Atlantic current is slowing, thousands of years worth of permafrost are melting, warm-water fish and birds and animals are moving northwards, the Inuit are losing their way of life....

but there's no proof of global warming.

9. cause you can't blame this storm on global warming

Galveston was totally destroyed by a hurricane in 1900. That was not because of global warming either. Sometimes storms just happen.

Sir David King, the British Government's chief scientific adviser, has warned that global warming may be responsible for the devastation reaped by Hurricane Katrina.

"The increased intensity of hurricanes is associated with global warming," Professor King told Channel 4 News yesterday. "We have known since 1987 the intensity of hurricanes is related to surface sea temperature and we know that, over the last 15 to 20 years, surface sea temperatures in these regions have increased by half a degree centigrade.

"So it is easy to conclude that the increased intensity of hurricanes is associated with global warming."

Professor Kerry Emanuel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also claimed, less than a month ago, that ocean surfaces had become warmer, which doubled the destructive potential of tropical storms in the past 30 years.

But he said that Monday's storm "is part of a natural" cycle of powerful Atlantic storms that have struck since 1995. He told The Independent: "I don't think you can put this down to global warming."
