Today I pulled into a gas station just to taunt the people driving SUVs
They were paying $3.19 per gallon!

There were three of the HUGE SUVs sitting at the pumps filling-up.

I rolled down my windows and asked the lady in the Cadillac Escalade, "Excuse me, how many miles per gallon do you get?"

"I don't know," said the lady.

(By the way, she gets 11 miles per gallon).

I asked the two guys filling-up a couple other SUVs.

They didn't know how many miles per gallon they got, either!

I guess they didn't care when they bought the things.

I bet they care now.

I called out, "I get FIFTY miles per gallon! You should have bought Hybrids, suckers!"

And then I laughed and laughed and drove away yelling, "Suckers! Suckers!"

I feel better now.

3. The mentality of a person who would buy a car and not know that
basic performance measurement escapes me. Even when fuel was "cheap", it wasn't that cheap. It's a major component of operating cost, for any vehicle.

12. I'm so glad I bought my Focus in the spring-it gets good mileage
I've never really driven a gas guzzler, though. My car history:

1968 Olds Cutlass F-85 (driven 1981-82, owned by parents) The only guzzler I ever drove, but man, it was a fast and reliable old car.

1976 Bobcat. Piece of crap, but got good mileage.

1978 Horizon. Same as the Bobcat.

1985 Mustang. Good car, good on gas, but no front wheel drive.

1992 Probe. Awesome car, but bad transmissions. I should have bought a stick. Great mileage for a sporty car.

1998 Escort, bought used. Piece of junk, not the best model year.

2005 Focus. I love it! 24mpg city, 30 highway.

75. I have an '89 Probe and I get over 30 MPG in the city.
It has almost 200,000 miles on it and runs like a top. Excellent car. I hadn't heard about Probes having bad transmissions but mine is a stick so maybe that's why.

And with the high gas prices, I bet the value of my Probe just doubled. ;) OK, it's probably not worth all that much so "doubling" in value doesn't really mean all that much but hey, it's a nice thought. And no, I have absolutely no plans of trading it in or selling it. I looked into that a few years ago but there was no way I was going to get rid of great-running, dependable car to get something new that got 10 MPG less. Screw that. I think I'll keep the Probe, thank you very much. I have absolutely no regrets on my decision.

They have money to burn and don't give a rat's ass.

How much to these beheamouths cost? $50,000? $75,000? More? If you're in that league, $3.19/gallon is nothing.

The rich are getting richer, the poor poorer.

29. Lots of people don't pay attention to mileage
My wife bought her last three cars on the basis of "cuteness" and power. This last time around, I made her buy down and get something with better mileage (she went from an SUV to a minivan). She complained about it at first, but as gas prices went up I started penciling out what she's saving with this thing vs. what she would have spent on that Durango she wanted. Today, she's happy to have it.

6. No taunting from me this am, but my VW Beetle
stood out in the crowd of SUVs. I noticed that the manly SUV drivers are the first ones to panic. Why is that?

I tried to stop last pm, but there was a line at the cheap station (Reg $2.83). There was no line across the street at the 76 station where reg was 3.06. This am, the cheap station was out of 87, so I paid 2.99 for 89 octane.

I put out an e-mail at work yesterday seeking people interested in forming carpools. One response so far (but it wouldn't work...she only works til 3pm every day and I'm here to 5 at the earliest).

Using it to commute from campus to work. Another is telecommuting 1-2 days a week as soon as we get the software in place. So people are already responding to the prices. BTW, neither of these folks drive guzzlers. Just need to save some $$$.

The OP specifically referred to 3 individuals who drive SUVs.

I own an SUV occasionally. Am I one of "these people" too?

Broad-brush statements and uninformed judgements like that are antithetical to liberalism, IMO.

i.e.-- the ones in GIGANTIC SUVs with Dubya stickers on the back, and "These colors don't run," who cut you off in traffic, and tailgate you, and generally make assholes out of themselves.

I've heard all the excuses for driving behemoths, but unless you need it for work, I really don't empathize with your indignant stance. Sorry.

Get as pissed as you want, but if you drive one of those monster vehicles, your choice of transportation is antithetical to liberalism as far as I'm concerned.

53. What's a little taunt at those who FLAUNT their conspicuous
consumption? The major premise behind owning a Hummer or an over sized SUV is the "fuck you, the environment and the world - I can afford it, so I'll do what I want" mindset.

Where I live, SUVs seem to outnumber regular-sized cars. Yet I see 95% of them being driven by 5-ft soccer moms (who can barely see over the dashboard) with no one else in the vehicle! Why does a soccer mom need a Ford F-150?

Don't like to face the truth, I guess.

I get up to about 37 mpg when all is well-tuned and I'm on the highway. I'm pretty happy about that, although my next car will probably be a hybrid, depending on how long this one lasts and what is available then.

Sorry, but such juvenile displays are not constructive at all, and are in fact quite counterproductive when this entire country needs to pull together in order to rebuild this country after all of the damage it has suffered. And since we need every single person's help, alienating even a few is foolish thing to do. Who knows, perhaps you just pissed off some big time liberal donors who will forego their donations, because of you.

Once she starts school, I'll probably run many of my errands on a bicycle.

There's no reason to drive a thousand pound piece of metal to go to the pharmacy about a mile away.

11. Ya' know that's just wrong. Sure some people drive SUVs that
don't need to, but by God there are some things that your hybrid can't do.

It can't haul a full bedroom suite of antique furniture.

It can't tow a 4000 pound sail boat (that uses 3 gallons of gas a year).

It can't pull a 6000 pound trailer for moving merchandise from warehouse to retail store.

And yeah, I know exactly what the mileage is on my SUV, it's 18 HWY, 12 City. Aggregate is 14.

You might as well bitch about the semi's that get 10 mpg on diesel. Your hybrid can't deliver 60 tons of canned goods either.

Get some perspective will ya'?

42. Well, there are some other reasons ....
Like, I lived in a mountain city and my company located to an area that caused me to have to drive through a mountain pass every day, come blizzard, rain, or sunshine. For me to keep my job and get to work each day, I had to have something sturdy and with four wheel drive and because I can't afford two cars, I had to have something large enough to haul around the family. Because I live on the edge of poverty, I couldn't afford to sell my house and move to the larger city because the homes are much more expensive there. And because I haven't the means to buy a new car now that I no longer live in the moutainous area, I have to drive the one that is paid off. So laugh all you want, but not everyone owns the car they own just because they want to trash the environment or use up fuel needlessly. Sometimes its the best option when options are limited.

some people need larger vehicles. If you have 3 or more kids you need a van or you can't buckle everyone in. If you are self employed you need a van. I hope no one does that to my husband driving his nice-looking van, loaded with brooms, buckets, vacuum cleaners, etc., etc., so he can work as a janitor. We have a nice looking van because it was the best deal we could get on a used van. It gets about 22 mpg. We don't like buying gas for it, but he needs to work.

I just spent two weekends in Crawford with a great lady who is a farmer - needs a big truck. Gets piss-poor MPG I'd reckon - yet she drove it to Crawford. At her own expense.

I'd love a hybrid, but I can't get one - yet.

mileage and drive a lot or bad mileage and drive a little. Same amount of gas, same green house gas, same cost.

By the OP's rationale you should have sold your house and moved closer to your destination or just stayed home.

When you pull your little hybrid (which still burns fossil fuel) into the parking lot of a mega supermarket to load up on groceries, you'll find out quickly that putting gas in your engine is the least of your problems. Unless your diet is strictly locally grown in season produce, you are just as bad as the dumbass Escalade owner. The 3000 mile caesar salad is an Escalade on a plate.

40. Not to mention the added debt you incur by buying a new car
Hybrids aren't free. Some people are running out and buying hybrids, in some cases two. On the surface it's a good idea. But NOT if you're adding 18-25k in new debt for a car, double that if you buy two. Few if any of these people are paying cash for their cars. They're selling cars that aren't paid for and getting into another lengthy committment. This is NOT a good time to be adding debt which is precisely why I will keep my 2000 Honda Accord that is paid for until the freakin wheels fall off. If I went a more fuel efficient car I'll sell mine, take what I can get for it and get a well used Civic or Corola -- without adding debt.

56. I understand your actions, but I feel a need to defend myself.
I once drove a SUV. I actually was forced to! I was in a pretty bad car accident quite a few years ago and have had a very bad back ever since. When I had my first son, it killed my back to lean down and scoop the car seat out of my regular car. My Dad was buying a truck and he gave us the SUV! That was truly a blessing for us. I am short enough that I just reached straight in and pulled out the car seat rather than leaning over and down. Yes, the weight still had an effect on my back but anyone with back trouble knows that if you do not pick up things using the proper stance, it can really hurt even more.

I had that SUV until both my kids could get in and out of the car on their own. That SUV was a life saver and left me in better health so that I could give more to my kids. I do not regret ever having it. In fact, just the opposite.

My sister-in-law has a mini-van because she has five children for a total of 7 people in their car every time they go out. They get lower gas mileage than a hybrid but they need something that big so everyone is safe in seat belts.

There are good reasons people drive gas guzzlers - just so you know.

57. Hate to say it, friend, but not wise-
Some people pack heat. Not only that, as has been said, some people need big vehicles for their businesses, or they have a handicap and need a wheelchair lift, etc. I ride a motorcycle that gets 60 mpg on the highway, but it would be asinine to ride it thru a gas station going, "neener neener neener." If the pumps shut off we are all shit outa luck.

I think we will see a repeat of 1973 and people will downsize to something smaller. Just saw on MSNBC that SUV sales are down, if that is any consolation.

Throwing food at the poor guy working for minimum wage at the gas station? Real productive. :eyes:
ETA: He has to buy gas just like you and me and is just doing his job.

72. Keep Adding to the Righties
Keep doing stupid things like throwing something at a minimum wage employee that you should supposedly care so much about just reinforces the crap the righties say about us.

Why are so many on our fringe left violent and obnoxious?

I own a Saturn that gets 25/34. I also own a Ford Explorer, yup, an SUV. Why? I own a business and I need a covered vehicle that can carry a large amount of merchandise at a time. The world isn't so cut and dry.

Everyone, I just want to make this point and see if I can get some agreement. Sometimes, it feels like some posters are no better than the righties with their black and white view of the world. Things aren't black and white, and that goes for the issue of trucks and SUVs. Many of us require a larger vehicle, whether it's for a business or if you have more than two kids. If I had more than my two kids in car seats, as a prior poster said, I'd have to dump the Saturn and get a minivan (ack) or another SUV. Things aren't so simple and cut and dry.

naughty, but sometimes some people need their nose rubbed in their own shit before they get it to stop shitting on everyone else's life. sometimes two wrongs do make a right -- people who say otherwise suffer from poor imagination. :P

pretty cool.

Otherwise when the gas runs out, you'd feel pretty silly sitting on the side of the road next to the people you make fun of.

73. You are not in a conceal carry state are you?
You know the story, you poke a dog with a stick enough through the fence, eventually the dog gets out...

46 states have conceal and carry laws.

The folks who are inclined to shoot you over a silly taunt are not the ones with CCWs. Its the criminals that carry illegaly in 50 states that you need to worry about.

But I agree with the poking a dog analogy though.
