CRWRC Prepares for Katrina
Kristen deRoo VanderBerg
GRAND RAPIDS, MICH – As the wind and rain of Hurricane Katrina bear down on homes in the Southeastern United States, volunteers and staff from the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee are hard at work preparing a response.
After slamming the tip of Florida and killing seven people in Miami and the Keys, Hurricane Katrina has grown to a Level 4 hurricane and is raining down along the Gulf Coast from Southeastern Louisiana to Mississippi. The National Weather Service states that Katrina is larger than 1969’s Hurricane Camille and comparable in intensity.
The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) is responding. Volunteers from CRWRC have already been working in the area responding to this summer’s Hurricane Dennis as well as the numerous storms that tore through Florida last year. Now, CRWRC is preparing Rapid Response and clean-up teams to deploy in response to Katrina as soon as the storm subsides. In addition, CRWRC Area and Regional Managers are in ongoing contact with FEMA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD), and other national voluntary aid groups in order to co-ordinate response efforts and ensure that all those in need will receive help.
Financial support for CRWRC's response to Hurricane Katrina can be given by calling 1-800-55-CRWRC (US) or 1-800-730-3490 (Canada).Checks be made out to "CRWRC," earmarked "Hurricanes 2005," and sent to 2850 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, MI, 49560 or PO Box 5070, STN LCD 1, Burlington, ON, L7R
