8. Top Canadian general says military stands ready to help U.S. if asked
OTTAWA (CP) - Gen. Rick Hillier says the Canadian military is ready to respond immediately if the United States asks for help in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina.

Hillier says he told U.S. ambassador David Wilkins that there are contingency plans. Although he says the Americans have most or all they need to help with recovery from the devastating hurricane, there may be things they need in addition.

Prime Minister Paul Martin told U.S. President George W. Bush by telephone as well that Canada will help in any way needed.

10. Not allowed to help
"On tonight's news, CTV (Canadian TV) said that support was offered from Canada. Planes are ready to load with food and medical supplies and a system called "DART" which can provide fresh water and medical supplies is standing by. Department of Homeland Security as well as other U.S. agencies were contacted by the Canadian government requesting permission to provide help. Despite this contact, Canada has not been allowed to fly supplies and personnel to the areas hit by Katrina. So, everything here is grounded. Prime Minister Paul Martin is reportedly trying to speak to President Bush tonight or tomorrow to ask him why the U.S. federal government will not allow aid from Canada into Louisiana and Mississippi. That said, the Canadian Red Cross is reportedly allowed into the area.

Canadian agencies are saying that foreign aid is probably not being permitted into Louisiana and Mississippi because of "mass confusion" at the U.S. federal level in the wake of the storm."

11. The Canadian government offered to help. I don't know what the current
status is but I believe at one point they were not letting foreign governments help. It would be a good idea to check the Globe and Mail for the current situation.

9. Accepting help would not mesh with their anti-UN
anti-global-cooperation strategies. That is my guess.

14. Iraq - Bush is egotistical maniac!
Canada wouldn't support the invasion of Iraq. And that pissed * off bigtime. So it's an ego thing.

17. One word: POLITICS
by the way I am betting my bottom dollar that the usual teams that respond to this are on stand by arond the world, not only the Canucks

But until we ask for the help, they cannot move.

I got off the pnone with my delegation and pointed out the DART team is on teh tarmac... and we need the help. I even took two out of the three of my delegation down the procedure...

19.  I just emailed CNN

asking for more coverage of which countries offered help and why we are refusing.
also emailed WH.

It is said that the best way to 'make' a friend is to ask for their help.

It has always worked for me.

21. They are nott letting Germany or France help, either. One
thing comes to mind... It has been said on this forum that the Bushistas are trying to stir up unrest in order to impose martial law all over the US (both with their refuse to help their countrymen and with eating cake/playing guitar/buying thousand-dollar-shoes while people starve and drown). Foreign aud workers would not be helpful in such a scenario. That's gruesome, and it's tin foil, but it's really the only explanation I'ver read so far.
