These churches who claim to be so compassionate sure are missing in New Orleans.

What happened to loving your fellow man? Lifting up those whom cannot lift themselves?

Or are you just a bunch of lying cretins who will rob the Treasury just because you've got a fellow Jesus freak posing as the pResident and he'll give you whatever you want?

For example, Mennonite Disaster Service, with responders on site already. Of course MDS was around long before the Bush Administration.

(And I say this as an agnostic who thinks the religious right is taking us back to the Dark Ages; Christians who act like Christians are supposed to deserve respect for it.)

21. The Mennonites do fabulous work. Many of my friends donate through them.

They do relief in every part of the world. And they don't offer help with one hand and heavy-handed Christianity in the other. They live their faith ... PERIOD.

3. I work at a Food Bank/Rescue in Michigan and I have been getting many

calls today from people and groups wanting to know how to help.

At least half have been church groups.

I never knew Second Harvest required it's participating religious groups to not proselytize to people needing food until I read your post yesterday. 4. America's Second Harvest is mobilized.

Faith-based food bank, nation-wide, operates more food banks than any other org in America. Orgs that work with them have to sign agreements swearing not to proselytize or otherwise inflict religious beliefs on hungry people. http://www.secondharvest.org/

The idea of gleening, that widows, orphans, and "strangers" should be allowed to go through fields and gleen whatever the intial harvest missed so that the least among the population could eat. They may not be faith-based by Bush Administration standards, but they are faith-based nonetheless.

Where's Jerry Falwell? Pat Robertson praying on the 700 club? UGH! They're only acting Christian when it helps the republican politically. Everybody should realize this now! I'm sure there are churches out there helping but not being loud mouths about it but these people who are usually loud mouths are no where to be found. Where are those organizations who were apart of "Justice Sunday"?

14. The Mormons are housing people, the Catholics are having

collections in every parish in the country this weekend, and Catholic Charities does wonderful work. The Methodists are doing the bucket thing, which is cool.

My own American Friends Service Committee is taking donations, although I think their resources are better used overseas in areas no one else will help -- everyone is helping on the gulf coast, but no one is helping in Afganistan, Palestine/Isreal, Iraq.

CRWRC to raise $5M for Catastrophic Katrina

As the chaos caused by Hurricane Katrina continues to be tallied, CRWRC mounts an ambitious campaign to raise $5 million for her victims.

Relief plans by Disaster Response Services (DRS), CRWRC’s North American relief effort are already in the works, just days after the category-4 storm crashed through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana on August 29. Money donated to CRWRC will help deploy rapid response teams to get needs quickly assessed, clean up debris, purchase building materials and repair homes, and provide funding for long-term reconstruction in those areas hardest hit.

DRS has a long history of hurricane relief in the United States, most recently responding to damage caused by July’s Hurricane Dennis in the Florida panhandle. A network of volunteers across the US and Canada give their time and talents to help clear debris, assess needs and rebuild homes after disaster strikes.

Though ambitious, the $5million goal is well within reach for CRWRC supporters. After last December’s south Asia tsunami, donations totally USD$7.7 million (not including the CDN$3.5 million matching grant from the Canadian International Development Agency) poured into the agency for relief and rehabilitation in India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
