There's that song that came out a couple years ago by the Happytones named "I Hate Republicans", and I thought one line was particularly insightful:

They want a government that's weak and won't protect us.

I thought it was the best way of putting it to counter the tired "big government" meme that the Republicans use. Of fucking course we don't want big government in and of itself, but we want one that can respond to things like this hurricane, and prevent things like the levee breach. I think we see how important the difference between the Republicans' weak-government plan, and ours is now. I hope some of the more reasonable Republicans, as well as the third-party freakish contingent, can see that now.

1. Well, it is weak and it isn't protecting us.
Mission Accomplished, Republicans.

2. A government too weak or incompetent to help
can't interfere with your personal liberties. It makes sense, in a way.

In a dumb way, because there's every once in a while it's nice to have a government with *ability* and *competence*.

Wiggum: (sigh) Fine, let me tell you what I tell everybody who comes in here: the law is powerless to help you.
Marge: Do I have to be dead before you'll help me?
Wiggum: Well, not dead -- dying.
(Marge gets up to leave)
No, no, no, no. Don't walk away. How about this: just show me the knife ... in your back.
(Marge leaves)
Not too deep, but it should be able to stand by itself.
