Hoard and Gather
That is the essence of survival. It is so instinctive, that some may not realize when they shift to that mode. I had to run errands today. The stores were packed on a Thursday afternoon. Very unusual. People weren't buying picnic supplies for the weekend. They were buying survival supplies. One of the clerks told me that people had been buying tons of canned food and just about everyone had at least a case of water. She asked me if they knew something she didn't. However, she said, she was going to buy a few canned goods to toss in the pantry and some water.
There was almost a surreal atmosphere. I can't explain it, but if you asked people why they were doing it, most probably wouldn't be able to tell you. But the truth is, nobody feels safe. So the instincts to hoard and gather have come to the surface. Welcome to the world of George W. Bush.

2. I've felt those same instincts today.. It's clear that AWOL Bush
is completely useless in times of disaster so we're all on our own if something terrible happens..

3. Right on the head
Humans have a natural INSTINCT for survival....even if they don't see the danger, they SENSE it and react accordingly.

This morning a sharp-shinned hawk snatched a mourning dove in mid-flight in my backyard and then flew under the branches of a blue spruce to finish his meal. The hawk wasn't being mean. He was surviving. We're not too far removed from that hawk.

4. If you need me, I'll be under my bed, with a bag of dried lentils,
a bottle of water and a slingshot.

5. thank you for bringing this up
I've been thinking the same thing but I don't have your eloquence to describe it well.

Americans everywhere gather and hoard all the time, all humans do. Just look at any shopping cart in grocery stores or Target or Walmart and tell me people don't gather and hoard. In best of situations, we do this in a calm, orderly way. The more desperate the situation, the more desperate the actions. Animal instinct. Survival.
