"Rice says all hurricane aid offers from other countries will be accepted"
04:45 PM CDT on Thursday, September 1, 2005

Barry Schweid / Associated Press

"WASHINGTON -- In a dramatic turnabout, the United States is now on the receiving end of help from around the world as some two dozen countries offer post-hurricane assistance.

Venezuela, a target of frequent criticism by the Bush administration, offered humanitarian aid and fuel. Venezuela's Citgo Petroleum Corp. pledged a $1 million donation for hurricane aid.

The United Nations informed U.S. Ambassador John R. Bolton it was prepared to support the relief effort "in any way possible."

Under Secretary-General Jan Egeland said his office had offered the services of the U.N.'s disaster assistance and coordination teams to the U.S. Agency for International Development."

I'm guessing that is the latest. It mentions Bushes rejection of aid - I think that was earlier today.

8. This is what I heard on the BBC this morning:
From the article - Bush saying: "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it."

"You know," he said, "we would love help, but we're going to take care of our own business as well, and there's no doubt in my mind we'll succeed. And there's no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city."

---

That is why I was hoping that that was then and this is now and Bush* got overruled.

5. NO...don't let bolton near it!!!
The United Nations informed U.S. Ambassador John R. Bolton it was prepared to support the relief effort "in any way possible."

We'll NEVER see the aid. They'll stuff it in his shirt and hide it and blame it on the U.N. instead.

6. WTF happened? Maybe my scathing phone calls to the WH
and both GA senators helped. I hope so.

Bring on the aid. Bush will like it cause it'll get his insurance compnay buddies off the hook. Business as usual.

20. They are saying they will accept them now...
"With offers from the four corners of the globe pouring in, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has decided "no offer that can help alleviate the suffering of the people in the afflicted area will be refused," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Thursday."

---

They probably realized they are really going to be in for it when people find out how many have died from lack of water, etc.

25. this is true, but i have a hard time believing her because...
no specific nation has been given the official go ahead to send their help.

A Canadian DUer said the US asked for firefighters, but that's it. Canada's DART system is all reved up to head down, but the US hasnt't asked for it.

14. I hope they attach a gag rule to their aid
Like "This aid connot be given to anyone who talks to the recipients about god" or something.

This is so totally Karma. Bush having to ask for international help. I hope someone in France rubs his nose in it.

24. Or playing tennis with Monica Seles? Or exiting the theater?
Between her behavior and chimpy strumming the guitar and eating cake, it could not get any more absurd...if you tried to write their behavior into a movie fiction, no director would let that part of the script be filmed, because one would believe it!!!!

23. Ask the people of NO if they want the aid
that their stupid government has refused. I'll bet any other country could do better that 36 pallets of food. Its disgusting. I can't imagine any people being so inept. FEMA has no excuse for any of this delay. How long did Florida wait when hurricanes hit there???
