Hastert: Looks Like NO Should Be Bulldozed
Hastert: Bulldoze Most of New Orleans

It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level, House Speaker Dennis Hastert said of federal assistance for hurricane-devastated New Orleans.

"It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed," the Illinois Republican said in an interview Wednesday with The Daily Herald of Arlington, Ill.

Hastert, in a transcript supplied by the newspaper, said there was no question that the people of New Orleans would rebuild their city, but noted that federal insurance and other federal aid was involved. "We ought to take a second look at it. But you know we build Los Angeles and San Francisco on top of earthquake fissures and they rebuild too. Stubbornness."

Hastert's press secretary, Ron Bonjean, said Hastert was not suggesting New Orleans should be abandoned or relocated. "The speaker believes that we should have a discussion about how best to rebuild New Orleans so as to protect its citizens," he said. "What he is saying is that rebuilding the city in the same way is not sensible."

There are "some real tough questions to ask," Hastert said in the interview. "How do you go about rebuilding this city? What precautions do you take?"

Hastert announced Thursday that the House, currently at the end of its summer break, would return for an emergency session Friday to approve some $10 billion in federal aid for hurricane victims.

"In the wake of this disaster, the people of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida should know that the United States Congress stands ready to help them in their time of need," he said in a joint statement with Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

5. Would This Prize Specimen Say The Same Of
Would this prize specimen of Republican legerdemain say the same of coastal Mississippi communities like Biloxi, Gulfport, Pass Christian, and Pascagoula--or is it Democratic New Orleans that he wants to see abandoned.

Typical Republican attitude--"I've got mine and you can drop dead."

16. Now we know what Denny thinks.
Nobody really agrees with him or even GIVES a crap what he thinks, but now we know what he thinks anyway.

Hope this comes back to bite hm in the ass in his re-election campaign. Wonder how much his conservative GOP base will agree with his call to abandon property owners in Louisiana in a time of dire need? They may not make the mind leap to the fact that THEY will be screwed by him too, but maybe it will wake a few of them up.

17. If all this devastation had been caused by terrorism
I doubt he'd say the same. The Twin Towers were bombed years before planes took them down but yet most of America supports rebuilding them even though they will probably be targeted again.

It would be impossible to rebuild NO somewhere else. It is either lost forever or will be rebuilt. Sure you could call another piece of land NO but it would be impossible. Do they think the communities will agree on where to move together? You can build a replication, like Plymouth Plantation or Sturbridge Village, somewhere else but at best all it could is a museum to a time and place that once was.

18. That's people's hometown he's talking about.
If nothing else, it's plain tacky and crude to be talking that way at this point, when there are still bodies of people's mothers in attics.

20. You know what? Hastert should be censured just for that!!
The news team at WWL is in shock, and they are trying to keep the public's spirits up. They're watching their hometown being destroyed, but they're trying to be positive to bring the news of rescue and recovery to their town.

Then Hastert opens his stupid yap, and you can see from the looks on their faces, it was like someone punched them!

He's an idiot! I'm so mad...
