If White House operatives released the name of an undercover agent in order to smear a political opponent, it would be a crime of the highest order. We need a full and fair investigation without the appearance of a major conflict of interest.

In 1997, you said that "A single allegation can be most worthy of a special prosecutor. If you're abusing government property, if you're abusing your status in office, it can be a single fact that makes the difference on that." Given your ties to the White House, I believe that you must recuse yourself from this investigation and appoint a special prosecutor to find out what happened. It's critical for our national security and the integrity of our government that we get to the bottom of this.

My personal note:

Revealing the name of an undercover CIA agent, especially one who was working on issues of weapons of mass destruction proliferation, is treason against the United States. It is an act that undermines the War on Terror, and is counter to everything the President supposedly stands for. The fact that this revelation was made for petty political reasons of revenge against a whistleblower makes it all the worse.

And yet this Administration has made no move to investigate the situation itself. It's quite apparent that they have no intention of getting to the bottom of the matter. Mr. Ashcroft, your failure to recuse yourself from the case and your refusal to turn the matter over to a special prosecutor only affirms that the Bush Administration and you have no intention of getting to the bottom of this treasonous act. There is a felon in the White House, but the President has protected him for two months, since the leak first occurred. I have no faith that anyone appointed by Bush will do any better in solving this crime. For appearances sake at the very least, you must turn this over to someone who is independent of political bias. It's the right thing to do.
