Why no 24/7 network coverage?
This is worse than 9/11, when we had 24 hour all day, all network coverage, not just cable. They are still showing soap operas and game shows all day. We have lost an entire American city. The death toll is going to top 10,000 at MINIMUM. It may be 10 times that.

2. We can't have the "common people" getting all uppity ...
The ones who don't have cable and who have felt similar hunger, thirst, outrage, frustration ... Oh, no, we wouldn't want that to spread beyond New Orleans, would we?

3. "The death toll is going to top 10,000 at MINIMUM"....where did you hear
...or read that? Just curious, I heard 100s maybe 1,000s, but I have not seen or heard that the death toll could reach 10,000. I've suspected that to be possible seeing seeing the scope of the devastation, but not yet heard any reporter or official admit that high of a number.

4. Why are there ballgames going on? Why aren't flags at half-staff?
Why is it business as usual when there is a CRISIS ONGOING and lives at stake?

11. Because they were born black. It's just that simple.
Like the head of FEMA said on the NewsHour just now to Jim Lehrer-

"We had no idea that these people even EXSISTED..."

Now we have a million newly homeless.

5. That's a very good question
and this is my hypothesis: a majority of Americans cannot identify with the victims because they are mostly poor and black. Most Americans are not poor and most Americans are not black.

On 9/11 however, a large number of the victims were well-paid professionals, high skilled workers and white.

It's just a hypothesis, but I think it is a question that must be raised, no matter how difficult.

6. Because everyone treats New York like it is the center of the world.
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 06:50 PM by SlipperySlope
A plane crashes taking off out of New York and people go apeshit.

A plane crashes in any other American city, and people forget it the next day.

The media treats New York like it is some kind of big deal or something.

8. I would argue that it's that way for all of the northeast
When I was a kid growing up in California I always somehow felt like a little bit less of an American because I lived "out there". I remember feeling like NYC, Boston, DC and Philly were these way far away places, and yet that that was where the "real Americans" lived.

It's still a sore subject for me.

12. Because this is an embarassment... Plain and Simple
Everyone knows what this could do to our economy and they don't want a total panic. 9/11 was a staged event to incite total panic and draw people towards the Gov. This is an act of nature, completely beyond our control and with Bush failing miserably, where can we turn? They're afraid dispair will set into the nation creating an economic catastrophe. They're trying to show that in spite of the tragedy, America is still moving. I believe this is probably the wisest course but it's also the most callous. If they were actually helping the people of New Orleans then it wouldn't be so disgusting but by leaving them to fend for themselves and not showing it to the poor masses, they are showing the world just how callous our government truly is.

See their fuck up live as it happens--no way in hell.
Remember, we really only had the images of the Towers over and over again for just one day--then they tapered off abruptly.

15. Because these pictures don't encourage the retail market: Not profitable
We liked the war because it kept us watching, but didn't stop us from spending.

I don't think anyone watching this wants to go out and look for the perfect coctail dress tonight.
