I don't want to sound the contrarian, but I find myself in some understanding with O'Reilly, may I live to pee on his grave.

"Looting" isn't just about ripping shit off--that happens every day and most of us wouldn't consider knocking someone off for it.

The word itself connotes something far worse: pillaging in the midst of a breakdown of the rule of law. It is a symptom of total chaos, a transitional state in society where all bets are off and mayhem prevails.

Looting most often occurs when the normal rules of society are so broken that they can't begin to address the actual state of affairs. Like it or not, the traditional way of dealing with looters is to start killing them, and unfortunately, shooting looters on sight--or the threat of doing so--is one of the few effective ways of restoring a dire situation when a community is totally out of control.

If you don't like it, well, I hope you have a taser and a generator to keep it charged when chaos comes to your home, because few untrained people can tame a plundering mob with logic and reason. If you have a better idea, you need to tell us right the hell now.

That being said and knowing O'Reilly and his audience as I do, I suspect that Dild isn't trying to provide a public service by voicing a threat--there ain't a damned TV in New Orleans tuned to Fox News tonight.

Instead, I know that intentionally or not, Dild is encouraging his lunatic fringe to go out and CONTRIBUTE to the mayhem by taking advantage of the open season created by the chaos. That's just... utter scummery, a term I find is nearly worn out when talking about the right wing.

I still hate you, O'Reilly, but shooting looters--in some specific situations--might be an unfortunate fact of life for some of those poor people on the Gulf Coast.
