I have heard that 'looting' is the least of the problem---rape and murder
are happening and street gangs are terrorizing areas of the city and other areas in chaos. Some areas are pretty dangerous and this is making the problem worse for the refugees, the victims and the rescue workers. And the situation is deteroriating

It is obvious to me that the majority of "looters" are just taking food and drink and clean clothes because they are forced to do so. A few people have taken TVs and stuff, but I don't see what use a TV would be in a flooded city with no power. I think most of that nonsense is over now anyway. By now everyone has realized the problem is far, far worse than we thought just 24-48 hrs ago

Has anyone else heard about any outbreaks of violence? Is this an internet rumor or is there any truth behind this?

2. I don't know what exactly is true. But Bush better get off his ass and
use the might of the Federal government to put fear into the hearts of the violent criminals. The State Department & the Pentagon are very well aware of the science behing mob violence. They know exactly how to stop it.

They choose not to in this case.

4. NO already had a huge poverty rate, murder rate, and the all the
drug users who go along with that... The mayor of NO made special mention of all of the drug addicts on monday, which tells you how serious that problem must be. And I suppose most of these stayed in the city... Given the conditions, no wonder there's chaos.

8. Thanks for Reminding Us
I used to live in Louisiana and whenever we went down to NO we were warned about pickpockets, etc. NO did have one of the highest crime rates in the City. Poverty and crime and heat seem to go hand in hand.

11. Yes, being from an inner city with lots of druggies and marginal people
I can completely understand why they are having some of the problems they are having. There are people dying from drug withdrawal, mentally ill people without their medications and criminals put in a special situation where they are without and they "want". I don't see why this isn't particularly obvious to everyone. At least I haven't forgotten what it was like living in the slums...

6. Some people are bad people
Some of these bad people might live or work near you and be of any class or race. They have always wanted to murder and/or rape. They don't under normal conditions because they are afraid of the authorities or the disapproval of their family or friends. These people use times like this to fullfill their dreams. I have talked to some of these people and frankly it scares me that there are people like this. They are out there though.
