If we could do that operation, surely we can handle New Orleans. I keep thinking of things like the Airlift, and the British fishermen, merchantmen etc that rescued the soldiers at Dunkirk. It is appalling that we can't manage that kind of spirit to save the people of one of our own cities.

and you are correct they flew planes in horrid conditions on very short runways if I recall.

The Truman administration reacted with a continual daily airlift which brought much needed food and supplies into the city of West Berlin.
