Katrina: > than 1900 Galveston Hurricane?

After the storm surge of 15.7 feet subsided, Galvestonians left their shelters to find 6,000 of the city's 37,000 residents dead and more than 3,600 buildings totally destroyed.

It remains to be seen in the next week or so, but I fear Katrina is going to surpass Galveston 1900. The seacoast is much more densely populated, plus a major American city, with hundreds of thousands of people still trapped by floodwaters, enters it's fourth day without food and water.

2. Loss of life? Who knows. Societal impact? Oh yeah - big time.

Wouldn't be surprised to see 10,000 dead, but just the number of dead is not going to define this storm. Much bigger than Galveston, San Francisco earthquake - and 9/11. I believe that.

The port of Galveston was as busy as New York. They ended up raising the whole island like 10 feet. If you ever visit tour the older homes the first floor became the basement.

It's a horrifying, factual account of the Galveston hurricane. I read it a few years ago, and it all came back to me. It's simply indescribable.

8. Katrina= Chernobyl. Toxic waste will kill sicken people, wildlife etc

this is a huge disaster - major societial, economic and human dislocation.
