So are people trying to survive on the streets. Looters shouldn't be raped or beaten or terrorized the same as anyone else. No more rapes. No more murders. No more people terrorized. No more. And the rhetoric will do that. The criminals - all 75 of them - now have to ditch their guns and dump their bounty and pretend to be as innocent as flowers. And that will save lives.

It is a matter of training. These military men and women are trained for war, not for domestic rescue missions.

Horrendous events like those in NO are likely to become more common. The Department of Homeland Security has existed for several years now. Why can't they handle this? Why haven't they figured out yet how to rescue enormous numbers of people from urban areas. Because they are not interested in crisis management. They are just a conduit for pork to the political friends of the Republicans. The Homeland Security money has gone into the pockets of companies that manufacture or sell security technology and services, not to prepare for the management of real emergencies, which as we can see in this case, can occur anywhere and for all kinds of reasons, not all of them related to terrorism.

What if there were a terrible terrorist attack, let's say a small nuclear weapon going off in a major urban area. As we now know, Homeland Security has no plan to take care of such situations. Their only plan is to sequester their friends -- the elite of D.C. in "safe" places until the crisis is over. Now we know. Our government has been sitting on its hands since 9/11. There is no disaster management plan. There is no plan at all. This is the greatest crime of the Bush administration. They have talked about terrorism and security since 9/11 and used it as a propaganda tool, but they have done nothing to plan to take care of people damaged by such events. What a sham. Shame, shame, shame on you Bush.

I live in the south as well and am white myself. If you don't think I know people personally who would do such a thing without any kind of talk beforehand if they thought they could get away with it, you'd be sadly mistaken. I do NOT believe the looting and "violence" has been anywhere near as bad as proclaimed. Yes, there's been some. I'm deeply concerned about the emphasis on PROPERTY over PEOPLE. I'm also deply concerned that there's been a bit of an echo chamber on the issue so that it sounds like a lot of people are "reporting" this, but in reality it's people REPEATING the reports, and those reports have had not all that much documentation, AFAIK.
