By Suzan Mazur
And would Carlyle's Frank Carlucci, once Nixon's Hurricane Agnes Flood Czar, best serve as advisor to the Katrina cleanup rather than as principal entertainer at his firm's annual 9/11 "soiree" in Washington, DC? (
Carlyle Investors conference agenda follows)
It seems unconscionable that the "world's largest private equity firm" is once again marking September 11 with its annual investors conference at the DC Ritz-Carlton hotel. But it is. Despite the growing economic impoverishment of a war-weary America and New Orleans now being wiped off the map -- it's business as usual for the Carlyle Group. The "Tapeworm" needs to continue to gorge. . .
But Frank Carlucci could set a precedent, be a no-show at the Carlyle event and commit to the rescue of New Orleans as he did in 1972 while serving as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget when he was handpicked by President Nixon, tasked with undoing the destruction wrought by Hurricane Agnes.
Agnes had soaked northeastern Pennsylvania -- Carlucci's childhood home -- with 14 trillion gallons of water, breaking the banks of the Susquehanna River. The storm sent flood waters 40 feet deep and two-miles-wide coursing through the quaint little towns there. Four people died, 64,000 homes and 3,000 small businesses were damaged.
Carlucci funneled $2.1 billion to Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley to rebuild the infrastructure. He brought in the Army Corps of Engineers to rebuild dikes and install dams in the upper tiers of the river. And he walked the devastated area "with his wife and young child in his arms". . .
