And he's not even an evangelical. I wonder if, besides the racism angle, this train of thought is also playing a role in Bush's bizarre lack of action 5 days into this disaster. Do evangelical Christians and others feel this is just a modern day example of Sodom and Gomorrah (sp)?

2. Your friend...
... hasn't thought much about this, huh?

Most of the time, it's a lot easier to just pass off something tragic as god's will than to think hard about the reasons.

3. yes, they do, but that doesn't mean a lot of other things
most of the evangelicals i know -- i know a lot since i've working in xtian music -- are either closeted or have a weird need to put themselves on a pedastal. they will say shit like this to your face and not connect the meaning to it. it's their way of giving authority to the church and their daddies that they apparently didn't get enough love from.

7. There is a LOT of denial going around.
I think some folks are scrambling their personal, internal resources all on their own. I had a friend say tonight that New Orleans is a city and a state problem. She may also listen to ...the pilonidal cyst guy. (If you get my drift.)

That NOLA has a HUGE Catholic population and pagan communities. These are also big 'no-nos' in the minds of some fundies. There is also a substansial Jewish community.

9. My mother made a similar remark tonight
I screamed at her. In fact I think I scared her. I told her that god didn't;t have a god damned thing to do with this and that the reason for these people dying was our government. They were at my house and visiting while I made some jam from some berries they picked. All the time they were here and we were chatting, I made them watch the news and listen to the police scanner in NO. I shoved the ugly truth right down their throats. It was tough love, kinda like a deprogramming for them, but I know, they left my house tonight with the blinders finally ripped off their eyes.

11. It's being punished for being a "Blue" city in a "red" state
Bush cut the funding for flood control and emergency management.

It's no more the wrath of gawd than if I stole the airbags in your car and then you died in an accident.

As far as I know, nothing has changed in the past 20 years, so why now?

24. Oh, please!
What a ridiculous notion. New Orleans is not being punished for it's sins. For Christian fundamentalist Neocons like Bush, New Orleans is the embodiment of everything they hate. It's a predomantly Democratic city. Plus it has Alcohol, Jazz, Homosexuality, anything considered sinful in their eyes. It's Bush and the Neocons that are really punishing New Orleans, not God.

26. So explain all the other countries
that not only have 'sin', but make it legal.

Canada, Holland, Spain and Belgium have gay marriage.

Not to mention all the things other countries do that the US would consider 'sinful'.

Pot smoking. Hate laws. No death penalty. Separation of church and state.

The idea that a supreme being with a whole universe to look after would have more to do than worry about one city, in one country, in one hick backwater part of infinity...

27. who is your friend to judge other people?
Parents have lost their children, children have lost their parents.

People whose only fault was they were too poor to find transportation out of town.

What kind of person is your friend?

Are the 100000 Iraqii civillians that were killed in our name sinful?

Were the six million Jews slaughtered by the Nazis sinful?

Were the Cambodians who lost their lives in the killing fields sinful?

Were the African Americans who were forced to be slaves in this country sinful?

What kind of "god" does your friend believe in?
