"people there wondered why all of us aren't driving
to help drive them out" from this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4571563

Can we do this? Can we just drive down there and pick up a family?
If enough people did this, it could make a huge difference, possibly
saving lives at the same time.

10. I would think that there would be plenty of people in need,
outside of the city itself. A three day weekend coming up.
Maybe my husband and I will drive down and see.
I have 2 spare bedrooms in my house.

2. terrible that people have been stopped since Monday
but people in the disaster zones don't know this. Also on the news tonight my husband said someone asked the same thing . They think we don't care.

3. logistics of thousands of cars jamming up the freeways would help
I like your idea. wait. wasting gas and wrongheadedly jamming up the works?

No.....I think maybe you should call your senator and congressman and ask WHAT THE F*CK we pay them for and where the government leadership of this rescue effort is.

I think you should donate to whatever reputable agency you can and make long term plans to help house dislocated people once the initial rescue efforts are complete.

9. Thus far, we have left it up to the "officials",
thus far, they have done shit but allow folks to die. Giving money does not mean that they will recieve it.

17. If they could evacuate a million in a day, then thousands of cars
won't be a problem. Plus, calling my Congresscritters has not once in the last five years gotten anything to happen. They live in a different universe, one which sees us as annoyances.

To get things done, we have to do them. Not yell at stone walls.

4. This crossed my mind. What if we all packed up
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 01:12 AM by Child_Of_Isis
and headed down there? I have a truck, an SUV (sorry;-) and a company gas card. Along with credit cards and a bank account. I would gladly give it all to get some of those folks out. We can set up tent cities.

5. I agree
I wish moveon (or some outfit) would organize it. My husband thinks it would be a waste of time and effort because people keep saying they won't let us in-- and he's worried we wouldn't be able to buy gas to get us there and back.

7. I would love to go to St Tammany and pick up my friend who is in a shelter
But St. Tammany has no gas (according to the WWLTV website) and the other states are running out. I had actually thought of flying into Tennessee and driving from there, but I was afraid I'd never get out of LA because of a lack of gas.

15. our family in St. Tammany (Lacombe) 80% of MS: no electricity
no electric=no gas. wait and see. maybe we can get them on the Crescent Amtrack train on a station north of Laurel,MS (Laurel damged heavily, it's on train route.) I don't know how they'll switch/turn the trains mid-route. Crescent: NYC-NOLA

11. If I could afford the gas, I'd do it
Even to rescue one young mother and babe, or one old man in a wheelchair, but they aren't letting anyone in, either.

This whole situation tells me that this administration couldn't fight its way out of a paper bag.

14. Can you even imagine just planning it!
Getting tons of people just to sign up and putting pressure on those responsible for doing? It would freak them out!

They won't let people in because it's too dangerous, I am not all that convinced about the mass anarchy the media is pushing.

16. No, you would probably find folks walking long before you even hit the
city.

It wouldn't be hard to just show up, and I would miss work and drive all night if I could afford the gas right now.

12. Mr. CB's family is in St. Tammany Parish: no one allowed into parish
If we need to have them come up here to GA we will have wait to actually speak with them in person. They are alive and homes not flooded but have tree and storm damage. That's all we know.

They got out a messge to us via ham radio-ham radio -phone to phone call to us: we're OK. 2 days later , nephew drove to Baton Rouge and called his sister from a pay phone: tree on house but no flooding. Cousin's house no flooding.

We have not heard from them for 3 days now. No electric or phone for 6-8 weeks as per mayor of Slidell. They are alive which is wonderful: best news of all.

Authorities say if you come to NOLA bring 2 weeks of fuel, H2O, food and other supplies.
