12. Believe it or not.....
That is the N.O.P.D. in that van.
Probably using that van because it has gas and their partol cars
have long since run out, plus it gives cover.
Hell I wouldn't blame them for comendeering that van.
The police gotta do what they can to control the looting.

24. Its from a blog inside New Orleans
A guy in a datacenter has been blogging since the hurricane hit. One of the guys inside with him took the picture and confirmed that they are police.

11. Desperation
Human animal instinct. I wish I were suprised. Just like every other animal, when backed into a corner the human becomes unpredictable. That is just as likely to be a couple of youth ministers carrying guns in the photo as anyone else.

20. A small joke. Not to sound flip or anything.
I actually saw the other photos from which that one came; it was a photo blog or something, linked in another thread- very interesting, I think the caption indicated that the guys in the Fedex car with the guns were, at least, supposed to be NOPD. I could be wrong.

Yeah, Terry Gilliam should win some kind of Karnak award for Brazil. Way ahead of its time.

I can't tell. The guy taking the picture must not have been too disturbed, or there would be no picture.

16. The guy at the side door appears to be a LEO.
They need a zoom on the hat and jacket patch. They could be doing recon. They could be civilians trying to impersonate LEO's. Not a good time to be outta uniform. Many of the uniforms have deserted and may have defected. They might be working with the gangs. It's hard to tell from that picture alone

Maybe that's the best footwear for a flooded out, destroyed, post-apocalyptic, 21st century, "Mad Max" type situation.

23. It's "casual day" in New Orleans.
Think of it this way -- where do you wash your uniform after wading through toxic waste? I'll bet you change into whatever you've got.
