How do we begin to save the hurricane ravaged areas of the South while our resources are stretched razor thin in Iraq? I’ve got an idea. Have soldiers conduct a poll: Are you for the Iraq war? Let's start with every group of College Republicans across the U.S. Why start there? We should start there because the Republicans of this country (with support from many cowardly Dems) called for the start of this war, surely they would support it, right? Judging by the number of SUV’s with ‘W’ stickers and ‘Support Our Troops’ ribbons on them, I’d say there are many in this category. Take the results of the poll and compile them. From what I see on Fox News, there must be millions in favor of the Iraq war. Take the ‘Yes’es and draft them. I don't care if they've got a boil on their ass or not (ala Rush Limbaugh), draft them. Don't warn them either. Let the Armed Forces simply show up at their apartments and pick them up. Don't give them the chance to skip town. As we deploy the College Republicans to Iraq, we can start bringing the overworked, overstressed, shell-shocked, underpaid, unarmored State National Guard units home. These units were never designed to be deployed beyond state borders, much less at the Baghdad Airport. They want to find their families, friends and communities. They want to help at home, and it's a task they were actually designed to be performing. Imagine that. Start by bringing Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama units home first. Let the chickenhawks fight this war, and let our National Guard units Guard our nation - here, where they belong.
Now I know a lot of people (mostly those who describe themselves “conservative”) will be mad at me. I’m perfectly fine with that. However, it’s about time we start putting our money where our mouth is as a nation. According to Republican mantra, any person who is anti-war does not ‘Support the Troops’. Is that really so? Let’s take the poll in my scenario and find out just how much Republicans support the troops. Maybe they would say that’s not a fair poll. Maybe I should consider another scenario: what would happen if the College Republicans knew the poll results were to be used for draft purposes? Contrary to what I’m bombarded with in the ‘liberal media’, I suspect a lot more votes would be ‘No’. Then let’s ask Ken Mehlman whether the ‘No’ voting CR’s ‘Support our Troops’ or not. Would the ‘No’ voting, non-war supporting College Republicans ‘hate America’? That’s what I’ve been hearing about the anti-war demonstrators in Crawford this August. I can already hear the tune changing.
