to spend the money. Remember this genius administration took us from a surplus all the way down to a trillion dollar deficit.

I also think they don't care. If it happened in a wealthier place with mostly white people the help and money would be there. Didn't help come to NY WAY FASTER than this???

Krugman makes the point in today's NYT--Bushco have never been serious about governing. Everything's politics, money and war. Good government and good public policy aren't even on the radar for this crowd. It's the height of irresponsibility. They're not just idiots--they're criminally negligent idiots.

Original message

Air-raid sirens, Frank Sinatra songs and Muhammad Ali trash talk blared over the Southern California desert in a demonstration of new acoustic technology for crowd control and disaster communications.

Representatives of both companies say that within days, they will ship some units of their respective products to areas hit by Hurricane Katrina, so authorities can use the tools for crowd control, aid distribution and rescue operations.

When a subject is at close range in MAD's sonic path, and it is set to high volume, the sound can be excruciating.

The ability to broadcast instructions or alerts at great distances with minimal distortion could be useful for authorities and rescue crews in areas where other communications systems are unavailable.

50. so that they can activate martial law and send refugees to internment
camps. According to a friend - FEMA has spent the last few years fixing up internment camps across the US. To put large numbers of citizens into internment camps, a fascist regime has to begin with populations that are already marginalized. A minority of people in this desperate situation act 'lawlessly' and the powers that be have 'reason' to enforce martial law. Where are 10,000's of people going to go when they can no longer stay in the 'domes' - camps are ready.

Dismiss cthrumatrix and I if you wish - this is not just incompetence, they are turning away private groups and inviduals who have volunteered to help. This is not just incompetence, IMO.

51. Go all the way to the top, and do not stop till you get there
FEMA reports to the Chimp. DHS reports to the Chimp. Defense reports to the Chimp. This rests squarely at the feet of the monkey. The incompetence is his, and his alone.

He appointed those incompetent crony-civilians, he meets with them regularly, he gives the orders--or more properly, FAILS TO GIVE THE ORDERS, he is responsible, and he is fucking accountable. NO ONE ELSE. Him, and HIM ALONE.

Someone at the Daily Show needs to grab that old debate footage where chimpy puffed up his chest and told the nation how HE would "lead."

Well, he's led us down the bluebell dotted garden path, now, hasn't he? While he is prancing about at photo ops, bodies are bobbing in the streets of NOLA. Now there's a side-by-side shot the networks oughta carry....

8. Rumsfeld is a cheap bastard. Look at how he ran the Iraq war!
The military told him they'd need over twice the troops that Rumsfeld thought necessary to win the war. So Rumsfeld fired the general who told him that. (THere's a link somewhere on DU, I'll have to find it.)

So now, I'll bet Rumsfeld just let those people die because he didn't want to spend the money.

tone of voice, and making reasonable requests and expecting timely responses." Of course, if she went off on them, they'd throw discriptions around like unstable, a harridan, a witch, too emotional, unable to cope...a male doing the same thing would be seen as forceful, aggressive, a leader...

For the life of me, in this day and age, why do they treat female leaders in this fashion? I guess they all need to take a page from Golda Meir or Margaret Thatcher--no one fucked with those ladies.

When will people listen to content? I think the woman made her needs plain, what did they want her to do, cry???

Does anyone know overall - nationally what percentage of the National Guard is in Iraq and Afganistan?

Couldn't they have gotten people (NG and other military people) from other parts of the country there by now? I mean, they (Shrubco) knew this was coming, what, Fri or Sat?

Thanx.

preparations before the god damn hurricane even hit - they knew it was coming, they knew it was hitting the Gulf Coast at or damn near New Orleans, and they knew it would be a big one - why in the hell did the wait so long to get the Guards asses in gear? FEMA? The Red Cross? This is inexcusable - all the Bush Administration deserves is a length of rope and a lamppost.

37. Not sure, but the media has reported that Louisiana and Mississippi
have more than 6,000 of their National Guardsmen in Iraq at the current time. Also, almost all of their states' NG's equipment is in Iraq as well.

They are in the process of moving NG in from other states, but is another delay to move people and equipment, and people who are not as familiar with the area are not as efficient.

I see some people blaming the governor of LA. While she probably could've done better in some ways, I think the feds are fucking this one up much more royally. This is evidenced by looking next door in Mississippi: they aren't seeing any significant presence of soldiers or relief agencies either yet, which tells us that this is not a Louisiana-specific problem.

Im not much of a Blanco or Landrieu fan but as soon as someone starts blaming it on them I have been quick to point out that this is the way its being handled in Mississippi.

I also point out that Atlantic coast hurricanes seem to get lots of attention even before landfall from FEMA in the past.

You might want to consider posting this as its own thread, even though things are moving fast.. maybe in GD:P???
