I have never been to NO and really have little concept of the layout and routes in/out. I understand there is chest-high(?) fetid polluted water in many places, but pushing through that by foot would seem preferable to dying of starvation or violence. How realistic is the thought that with enough determination, someone could walk out?

1. Being as a huge chunk of the population left there is elderly and sick
Walking out is not going to be an option. It is hot as blazes there, there is no water to drink, no food to eat. Basic things we take for granted every day are luxuries to those dear people right now. Just sustaining at the various shelters is not possible for some. I would venture to say that walking out of NOLA is going to be impossible for even the healthiest, as even they have no resources to sustain life.

2. Story on local Dallas news of 4 tourists who did just that.
Hitchhiked once they got to major highways. One man drove them most of the way in the back of a pickup and they were very grateful. They were all pretty hale and hearty adults, though. Many would not be able to.

I just wondered what the specific realities are. How many miles would have to be walked to dry land and food/water/shelter?
