You just have to believe that shrink is having a field day evaluating this madman under these circumstances.

Running this country is kind of like a pilot flying an airplane. For the most part, it runs itself. Thousands of bureaucrats out there doing their thing, making sure checks are cut, services provided (however good or bad, and taking things out of the political context for the moment). Kind of like an airplane. You turn it on, rev it up, turn on the auto pilot, and the thing takes care of itself.

Until it doesn't. That's when it's sort of important for the pilot to really understand how that plane works and that there are hundreds of lives depending on him. When "oh shit" is not what the passengers want to hear. What they really want to hear is, "Ladies and Gentleman, this is your captain speaking. Things are going to bumpy for a few minutes while we make our way through this turbulence," when what he really means is, "Our number three engine is on fire, the hydraulics are out, and I hope your affairs are in order."

Well, this plane is on a crash course for that mountaintop straight ahead of us, all engines are on fire, hydraulics are out, radio's dead, co-pilot has had a heart attack. And the guy in the pilot's seat is suffering from presenile dementia and would much prefer to be at home, tucked into bed, sucking his thumb, while daddy and uncle Bill take care of things.
