"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted in a sick society." (Krishnamurti)
"We have met the enemy, and he is us." (POGO, by Walt Kelly)
Another quote I'm fond of throwing around is one I can't place the author of: "New York City is three missed meals and a power failure from Revolution at any given time." I thought it was Abbie Hoffman, but nothing locates it to him.
The USA has Cancer, and it is like a Stage 4 tumor in the breast of a beautiful woman: we miss the point that it will KILL HER by getting sidetracked in the issue of the disfigurement of beauty.
Our society has far too long touted itself as the epitome of perfection and beauty as relates to the cultures and nations of the world, and we brag about it constantly in a perverse way that parallels sending free subscriptions to PLAYBOY magazine to starving children in Africa.
We are animals: this is a fact. It's one of the reasons that the "Intelligent Design" and "Creationism" folks keep on ranting: they don't want to know that we share more DNA in common with the great apes than RATS do with MICE. It's not a comforting image.
The disaster in New Orleans, aside from the Bush administration's reprehensible behaviour in both helping to cause it and failing to relieve it, stands as an object lesson. An example: a helicopter evacuating TULANE hospital was shot at by people on rooftops. Why would they do this? They answered the question themselves: one man with a gun screamed at the copter and its crew; "You better come back for my family!!!" Survival is the common denominator in NOLA. Survival is the common denominator EVERYWHERE.
We are the first self-aware animals to group together in clusters larger than the family or clan. In doing so, we forget that in crisis fight or flight will always kick in, and the programming back there in the heart of the brain tells us "Save the kids, save yourself, FUCK everyone else." This will always happen to the vast majority of us: Gandhi was an exception, not the rule.
We cannot force the hand of evolution. Logic tells us that will only strengthen the ties with the animal instincts, and civilization cannot stand in the path of the elephant called instinct. They don't call it Natural Selection/Survival of the fittest for no good reason.
The solution is not very attractive; America as Supermodel is not a condition of stability. No matter what the "freedom to get what I want or am able to get" crowd says, "freedom to be an idiot" is where the death of civilizations lies. We MUST level the field. There is no longer any choice here: if the pseudo-solution of raising everyone else to our standard wins, the World will choke, burn, then drown.
NOLA isn't a wake-up call: it is an air raid siren. It's our choice as to whether or not we go to the shelters or STARBUCK's. We ignored the mamogram because to address it would screw with the way our dresses fit: now we can only take the radical surgery, radiation and chemo, hoping we were not too late.
