Texas plans to take more refugees (total # at least 75,000)
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 09:09 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
AUSTIN, Texas -- The state of Texas on Thursday agreed to take in three times as many refugees from Hurricane Katrina as officials initially expected, bringing the total number of evacuees to at least 75,000.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry announced that 50,000 more refugees would relocate to Texas, with plans to house 25,000 each in San Antonio and Dallas. Those people would join 23,000 others who were sent from New Orleans to the Astrodome in Houston. The Astrodome soon filled to capacity and was closed Thursday night.

Perry declared an emergency disaster for the state, freeing up money to provide services for hurricane victims. In the short run, government agencies and even some credit card issuers are offering relief to victims of Katrina.

I hate to be the one to post this here, but I wanted to put some peoples minds to rest. I'm as surprised as the rest of you that Gov Goodhair is doing the right thing.

1. You have to give Texas a lot of credit
They have organized to really provide relief for these people. Too bad the federal government can't do the same.

2. Only because his
ass is on the line & election coming up -- he doesn't actually *care*, but whatever the reasons, glad it's being done!! I read in our local paper that the kids evacuated to our area have already been registered for school & starting next week, and the shelters are being set up to operate on a permanent basis so they can stay as long as they need to. They are the lucky ones -- sure wish the others could get the same....

3. Bingo!
That's what I said earlier in a post. This is a political move on Perry's part.

I'm just glad something good is going to come out of it.
