National Guard not allowing aid into the city
National Guard not allowing aid into the city

...

There are supplies sitting in Baton Rouge for the folks in New Orleans, but the National Guard has the city surrounded and is not letting anyone in or out. They are turning away people with supplies, claiming it is too dangerous. If we have planes that can drop bombs on people in Iraq, certianly we can air drop supplies into the city. Our goverment is KILLING the people of New Orleans. This is the message I am now sending to all major media sources, national and worldwide, as well as posting to email lists, blogs, etc. The story is getting out that the people there are not getting supplies, but the truth of WHY is not. Please help spread the word, we must get this story out. Please so not let any more of my friends die.

I can be reached at 254.640.8441 - feel free to call me or give my number to any media that needs a contact person to talk to.

...

I have recently managed to speak to some friends stranded in New Orleans. They are starving and dehydrating and there is no news of when they will be receiving food and water. I have spoken to relief efforts and understand that there are plenty of supplies waiting for these people, BUT THEY ARE NOT BEING ALLOWED INTO THE CITY.

The National Guard has the city surrounded and is not letting anyone in or out, except the buses being evacuated. The excuse that they can not bring supplies into New Orleans because of the looting and gun fire is not a valid excuse - if they are too afraid to enter the streets of New Orleans, they need to be air dropping supplies into the city. If the United States is capable of sending planes that can withstand enemy fire to drop bombs in Iraq, certainly they are capable of air dropping supplies into a city where the worst of the gunfire they could encouter would be from semi-automatics.

Our government is killing the people of New Orleans. By witholding supplies, they are ensuring more deaths, and I hold them complicit.

Please bring this matter to the attention of the people of the United States. They need to know that New Orleans is deliberatly being denied food and water. Perhaps if the people there had food and water, they might not be shooting off guns.

Did I read that part correctly: not letting anyone in or out?

So those who are trapped in the hells of New Orleans are doomed to stay ??

7. We need to storm the barricades, then!
Can't WE charter buses and go? If DR. SANJAY GUPTA
can get in, surely we can. Can we charter buses from our home
towns - mine is Columbus, Ohio - round up volunteers and supplies and go? I'm ready to go find the 'spokesman' that's at the Convention Center and let him show us where the help is needed! Anyone know how to live-feed video of our bus being turned back?

They keep saying 'send money not people or supplies' but the Red Cross has collected $15 million plus from people like us and STILL nothing is being delivered.

I'm beginning to believe the public is being told to stay away for the same reason that cell phone cameras are banned in Iraq! The gangsters running this administration didn't get a chance to vet embedded reporters this time, and they don't like it one bit.

I live in an urban neighborhood, and I'm not afraid of the poor, the sick or the powerless. I'm beginning to feel that some of us NEED to go...

52. I'm seriously considering it - are you near Columbus?
But I think the supplies are suddently going to start flowing, now that Rovie has all the props in place for the spin. Still, that doesn't mean people will actually be helped, they'll just be exploited.

I'm facing a very real moral crises: do I stand by and let them spin this, too? Will the outrage we feel today be replaced by the outrage we feel at NEXT horrific act, while most of country blandly eats the spinners' pablum???

Will this fade away from public attention, like the election fraud, Rove's treason, Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, African uranium, etc., etc.?

Do we have a moral obligation to get on a bus, go to the reporters on site, and make ourselves as visible as Cindy Sheehan did?

How much will we allow? What can we really DO? I've knocked on doors, gotten out the vote, become a one-woman information spewer to all family, friends, and neighbors, put signs on my house/van/bikes, deluged my elected officials with mail and phone calls, neglected my own livelihood and family, and it all seems to have been an exercise in futility.

Maybe this is the clarion call? Charter a bus and pass out water??? As you suggested, bring one family back? What will finally make a difference?

88. With the unknown number of dead, cholera and typhoid are real
fears in the next few days. Also, the sewers have been washed out into all that water, so E Coli is probably contaminating everything. The very young, very old and those with depressed immune systems could be at risk for these diseases - the responsible thing would be to contain it, check out the people who could be infected, then transport them out of the area - if just one or two infected persons went out to one of the other shelters, then the problem could spread.

While I'm highly, furiously critical of the overall mis-handling of this tragedy - it sounds as though someone has gotten on the scene who's making decisions to minimize any more casualties.

77. I'm starting to think this way too.
But think of this: If a great number of those survivors, those REFUGEES, in NOLA and the Gulf Coast region devastated by Katrina and then the failure of levees (which was predicted by so many), come out eventually, *THEN* THEY WILL BE TELLING THE TRUTH about what is happening right now. They will describe in great detail all that has occurred since the day Katrina hit and the communications went TOTALLY DOWN.

The administration cannot afford to have thousands of stories from those who lived it going out to Americans and the world, all telling the same truth of negligence, purposeful delay, and deliberate prevention of relief and rescue delivery. I'm no conspiracy buff either, but how else can BushCo spin this without having their version denied by the victims?

Dead people don't contradict the spin doctors' version of things.

61. I think you are right
I don't know if this has been allowed to degrade this far so that a joint FEMA/military exercise in how to deal with extreme situations can be run or what - but SOMETHING IS FISHY. They knew New Orleans was below sea level, they knew the hurricane was gonna probably hit there DAYS in advance, they knew a plan would be needed for how to help these people - yet here we are 4 days later and they are just now getting around to it? Did our government want these people to riot so they could run a exercise having declared Martial Law? I am really wondering what is behind the slow, incompetent response of our government. And of course they knew it would be mostly poor people who couldn't evacuate in time, and we all know how Republicans feel about poor people. :(

27. Do you suppose this will change right after Dubya's visit
so he can look like a hero? "I went down there and took charge. Now people are getting out and supplies are getting in." That way he can put the blame on the various agencies and make himself look good. I wouldn't put anything past him at this point. He knows he's in deep doo-doo over his handling of this whole thing so it's time to shift the blame somewhere else.

Of course, if the supplies finally start getting in and the people start getting out, that's a GOOD thing and I'm all for it. If it allows * to puff up his chest for a few hours I really don't give a damn at all. Right now all that matters is saving the lives of those that are in NO. That takes precedence over everything else.

Even if he were to go down there, snap his fingers and return everything to normal, there would still be the question: "why the hell didn't you do this 3 days ago?"

It's just too late.

But I agree with you in hoping that his belated attempts to look vaguely like a president will result in lives being saved.

34. Hospitals in Outlying Areas Say:Where are the patients?
NPR had a good story yesterday about the hospital situation. Only one hospital in New Orleans is fully functioning. Most of the hospitals don't have ANY WATER. They are in desparate straits, with very limited electrical power. One staff-person said they may need to decide who will live and who will die, by stopping care for the most critically sick patients.

Meanwhile, NPR had reports from undamaged hospitals in outlying areas. Those hospitals put themselves on full emergency status to be ready to accept patients from New Orleans. The patients haven't arrived. They have hundreds of empty beds, they have full staffs on hand, they have empty operating rooms - but the patients haven't been brought to them. They are sitting helpless in frustration.

47. Minstrel Boy, I was watching the local news on the NBC affiliate
in D.C. this morning. The anchor said that a van full of water, food, supplies, medicines, as well as Loudoun County sheriff's deputies and fire and rescue workers left Leesburg, Virginia this morning, heading for the Gulf Coast and New Orleans. They had to turn around and come back, because FEMA HAD NOT GIVEN THEM THE NECESSARY AUTHORIZATION TO GO AND DISTRIBUTE SUPPLIES.

This is absolutely outrageous. I called this morning to volunteer with the Red Cross and be sent to the Gulf region. As of 1:25 EDT, I still haven't heard anything back (although they may call later).

How, the name of everything that's holy, could something like this HAPPEN? This is AMERICA, for God's sake. We can send troops to Iraq to fight a war we shouldn't have started to begin with, but we can't send troops to help people in the LARGEST humanitarian crisis we've ever had in this country? Dear God!

56. I just appended this post to the Indymedia site:
I have elsewhere encountered speculation (e.g. www.democraticunderground.com) that posits a motive for the Guard's refusal to let assistance get through until today. The reason, simply, is that the Bush Administration ordered this delay so that they could create a public relations scenario with the President leading the convoy of assistance into New Orleans. If this theory is true, then assistance was withheld from the survivors for several days in order to permit the Administration to do a bit of play-acting in the role of a rescuing hero. Surely a few hundred (or a few thousand) additional, otherwise unnecessary deaths is a small price for the nation to pay so that they may see their President pulling a public relations stunt.

70. Good grief, no -- the photo op is just opportunistic, not the cause
It was taking advantage of the fact that they finally were forced to get the services in.

The reasons for the delays are much more sinister, less superficial (see some of the threads in my post downthread).

The press, however, may have inadvertently forced them to abandon some of their plans because for the first time the media actually told the truth and didn't provide cover for them.

58. THEY WITHHELD RELIEF TO WAIT FOR BUSH'S PHOTO OP
It's as clear as day. They were waiting for Chimpy to arrive and choreographing the whole thing to try and make him look good.

I'm beyond disgusted, but there's really no other plausible explanation, considering how the relief started rolling pretty much as soon as Chimpy finished his little photo op.

60. My friend in Opelousas, LA said her town sent boats
down to NOLA yesterday and the day before. Local people in a Louisiana town 300 miles from New Orleans got together and gathered their boats, set off to try to help in rescues.

When they neared the city of New Orleans, they were turned around by the National Guard and sent back home.

More locals in Opelousas have been gathering up clothing and food and essentials for many -- MANY -- refugees from the Gulf Coast area who have come streaming into their town, desperate for help. My friend and her neighbors are opening their homes to these people, who have nothing but the shirts on their backs and are tired and in shock and absolutely at the end of their rope.

There are three shelters in Opelousas, all full to the brim but no one coming into town is being turned away. "We are managing," says my friend Annie. "We'll take care of any who find their way to our town."

The local motels are also full to bursting with refugees, and those who cannot pay are being taken care of anyway. Not sure how, if locals are paying or what.

From all I have seen so far, and I've been watching this horror unfold on television news since two days before Katrina came ashore, indicates that the ONLY relief reaching those who desperately need it has been brought in by individuals or small operations such as local churches who took up donations.

Some are saying, "Now is not the time" to be criticizing the relief effort or accusing those who failed miserably to prevent the unnecessary parts of this disaster, including loss of life, and failed as well to render aid and assistance in the time frame it was needed. This will be the hue and cry from those who fell on their face in front of all Americans and the entire world in this catastrophe.

Then they will figure out some other clever catch-phrase, some "good reason" WHY we should not examine what went wrong and why the resources needed and certainly available in this country were NOT allowed in to the people who were dying of something as basic as lack of water, food, and medical care.

75. Something else to add to the mix...
My sister in Dallas said a friend of hers took his chopper down to NO to check out the propoerty of a friend and to see if he could do anything.

When he got there he said he saw loads of military choppers and personnel ringing the city -- not in the city -- ringing it. He also saw what he described as around 1000 personal watercrafts around the water entrances heading towards NO. When he got fuel from a local airstrip he asked about the boats and was told they belonged to locals who had been trying to get into the area to help ferry out survivors, but were kept back by the authorities.

My first thought upon hearing this was, "Are they trying to keep people out, or keep people in."

74. Here's the Nasty Reason for Locking Down NOLA: Quarantine
I am not a public health or infectious diseases expert, but this is what I think is motivating the decision to shut down evacuation and relief efforts.

The germs that cause Cholera and Typhoid are already incubating inside of large numbers of the survivors. There is no way to effectively isolate and treat all of those infected if they were allowed to simply evacuate and disperse in large numbers.

The fear is of a nationwide spread of deadly contagious diseases. The people of NOLA are being quarantined. The expectation is that virtually all will be dead within 5-7 days. Whether or not waters recede, they will find a way to burn what's left of the city.

This is not necessary. After the Tsunami in December, there was no comparable effort to contain the affected population by the use of troops. But, post-event diseases killed are estimated to have killed more people than the tidal wave itself.

This from the Agency France Press, "Chronology of the Asian Tsunami Disaster" http://www.garnertedarmstrong.ws/Mark_Wordfroms/manews0028--resource--4.shtml :

"-- DEC 29 --

The World Health Organisation warns there could be as many deaths due to disease spreading as a result of the catastrophe as caused by the tsunamis.

The death toll rises to 80,000."

That may be the grim calculus that's driving these strange actions by the authorities. I hope I'm wrong, and encourage debate on this subject.

Initially by neglect, and then by incompetence, and now by active measures, BushCo is killing an American city.

86. Va. Police and EMTs Can't Get Permission to Enter Louisiana
Va. deputies can´t reach FEMA, Louisiana officials
September 2, 2005 12:00 am

LEESBURG, Va. (AP) - A group of Loudoun County sheriff´s deputies heading to Louisiana to help maintain order among hurricane refugees had to turn around at the Virginia border when they couldn´t get confirmation from emergency management officials, the Loudoun County sheriff said.

After attempting for 12 hours to reach officials at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Louisiana Emergency Operations Center, the deputies were told to head home. The group of 22 officers and six emergency medical technicians was expected to arrive back in Leesburg by 2 a.m. Friday.

"How many people have to die in the interim while they try to make this happen?" Sheriff Stephen O. Simpson told WRC-TV.

The deputies were to be sworn in locally as law enforcement officers in Jefferson Parish, La. near New Orleans. Their assistance had been requested by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff´s Department through the National Sheriff´s Association in an Aug. 31 letter, said Sheriff´s spokesman Kraig Troxell.

A three-week schedule was planned to rotate deputies from Loudoun County to areas of Louisiana that needed help. The deputies were carrying extra guns, ammunition and supplies to make them self-sufficient for seven to 14 days. The group waited in Harrisonburg, Va. for several hours Thursday night until they were told that officials from FEMA and the state of Louisiana couldn´t confirm the request from Jefferson Parish.
