The FEMA director redirects the blame for the disaster on the poor and blacks in NO for not leaving when they were told to leave. Never mind that a lot of them had no car, no money, no way to leave the city.
The national guard are called in with orders to shoot to kill people who are "looting" stores in search of food and water. Reporters can walk around the city, without problems, to report on kids and elderly people who are dying after the hurricane because they have no food or water. Yet Michael Chertoff goes on national radio arguing that the rumors of thousands of people (mostly black and low-income) are gathered at the convention center and that people are dying as they wait for help "can't be verified".
During last year's Florida hurricanes Bush and the GOP was all over the state with disaster relief. Yet it took almost 5 days for the federal government to get water to the citizens of New Orleans (remember, there's no guarantee that you can survive longer than 3 days without water). Most of it was probably due to the fact that it was an election year. Some of it could be due to the fact that Florida has a high number of white, elderly, and wealthy people. New Orleans, on the other hand, has a high population of African Americans and a lot of poor people.
So how are we doing these days in regards to race? Are we treating everyone as equals? Are all men in our country "created equal" or are other people more equal because they are white?
Just curious.
