planes did NOT report being shot at

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1087205

Laura Brown, a Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman in Washington, said she had no such report.

"We're controlling every single aircraft in that airspace and none of them reported being fired on," she said, adding that the FAA was in contact with the military as well as civilian aircraft.

20. I have felt that this was the case ever since I heard about shots at
the rescue helicopters. Someone from Charity Hospital was at the governor's news conference Thursday afternoon and he said that there had been no gunshots or security breaches in the system. When I heard about the gunshots, my first thought was that it didn't make any sense. The only one who would profit from that kind of the story is Bush. Fomenting those kind of rumors shifts the focus from the miserable failure of this administration.

5. People on roof tops were probably trying to get attention
I think people on roof tops wanting to be picked up shot a gun to get attention to their situation.

8. That was my take, too.
I would be shooting up in the air to get rescuer attention. And people who have escaped from NO have reported gun blasts every half-hour (from another DU thread - I can't find it because 'search' has been turned off).

9. exactly...
read any backcountry survival manual (espcially those by military press), and you will be told to fire into the air to draw attention. three, though is the usual number. that was my first thought... it's not hooligans shooting at rescuers, but trying to catch attention. but damned sensationalists would jump to the worst.

15. That's what I thought.
If there were shots fired, which I'm not convinced there were (it doesn't have to be a conspiracy -- just false reports -- we all know how rumors get started and in this chaos, rumors are extremely likely) -- then I would assume it was people trying to get attention because they NEEDED HELP.

21. My thoughts as well.........
who,in their right mind, would shoot at their rescuers? It doesn't make any sense at all.

These people have been ignored for so long they'll do anything to get someone's attention, but they'd never shoot the people coming to help them.

Another media generated "story" to convolute the truth.

10. I heard this too.
Heard that the media (specifically CNN) made false report and didn't retract it.

But in defense of CNN, they have shown and said some things I never thought I'd hear from Fox-lite. But I'm not a very reliable source since I turned off my tv last November and only watch Daily Show now.

17. I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT. THIS IS ALL INTENTIONAL, folks.
Dammit, I knew it.

THIS IS ALL INTENTIONAL -- the delay in getting aid there so things get to crisis/flash point and we're all BEGGING for troops to be brought in, the blaming the victims, the exaggeration of the looting as a set-up for killing more of them.

READ THESE:

First just SOME of the blame the victim "corporate culture" at DHS and FEMA:

We ALL know there is NO excuse for not dropping in food and most of all water. There just isn't. For DAYS there was none (I think yesterday was the first, and not all that good either). It gets to the point it just can't be chalked up to incompetence. It just can't. It's well beyond that.

24. But.... but.... but....
....the MSM reported that a National Guardsman had been shot.

Of course they didn't tell us who he was. No one interviewed anyone who was in the helicopter with him. We don't know what unit he was with or where the shooting took place.

Facts are nasty little things. Are there any facts to support the initial report?

28. Maybe the reports of shots were to cover for inactivity.
Bush was scheduled to visit in a few days, and they didn't want to get there ahead of him - it would spoil the visuals. Thus, the planted rumors of people firing on their rescuers, which always seemed like unlikely behavior. Just speculation, because I do think Bush is that rotten.

29. I am not surprised at all - and pleased to hear this correction REPORTED
The rumor of those shots could be due to something reported in another thread - shots fired NOT AT planes or rescuers but to SIGNAL where people are waiting for rescue:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4571563

Or the rumor could have been deliberately planted, which would fit my personal theory that the neocons WANT us all to erupt in divisive violence so that they can invoke a Pentagon-driven domestic military police force around the country. Very scary scenario and I do have reasons for suspecting it. But you know what? It doesn't matter in the short term whether the cut funding and criminal delays that are resulting in so much more devastation and death are the result of callousness, greed and incompetence "only" or due to truly malicious deliberate planning. Either way, we must channel our horror and outrage as well as our compassion and hunger to help into well-planned, effective nonviolent actions that will unite and energize the country for
1. aid and resources to the suffering and homeless – everything they need to start their recovery and start healing their trauma as much as can be done
2. organization of how to unite and respond nonviolently and most effectively now and henceforth
3. inspiration of the American public with effective goals to create true change
4. US regime change
5. Joining the world community and moving forward

And yes, I am collecting the ever-lengthening list of evidence for the criminally negligent (at the least) actions of this Administration. They will not succeed in lying their way through this one. Never again. This is the turning point.
