On my own initiative, I called United Airlines, where I am a member of the air-miles program, to find out if I could donate air miles to either help get people the hell out of the disaster area that was New Orleans, or get doctors and voluteers and helpers IN, to help those in need.

Fortunately, I found out that United airlines is doing just that, and I donated the entire 18,000 miles in my mileage account to The American Red Cross...maybe that will help get one doctor IN, or one unlucky soul OUT!!

Anyways, being unemployed as I am, I could think of no other way to help. Check with other airlines, see if they are doing similar things, and if you are a member of United Mileage Plus, you can donate airmiles to The American Red Cross, as I did, by going to United.com, the main United web page...and Click on the link that says "Unite to help victims of Hurricane Katrina." Scroll down the page for a hyperlink that says MPCharity Miles. This will take you to a page where, online, you can donate air miles to The American Red Cross, or other organizations that are helping in the relief effort in New Orleans and Mississippi.

I am grateful to God that He inspired me to this idea, because I originally thought of this all on my own, wondering just how the hell could I help, with no resources, thanks to unemployment.

I am going to ask that everyone who reads this, please nominate it...and recommend it for home page, this is very important information, and the more I can get this seen, the more people will have a way to help out in this tragedy.

Please, I am begging for DU's support and help here in helping even further than my own donation was, by gathering hundreds and thousands of donations just like mine...TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

had a donation-program set up specifically for victims of Katrina as of right now. On American's website, it IS possible to donate your miles, so maybe you could call them up and request they join the other major lines?

Hey, if ya got it, and ya can spare it, by all means, donate cash, food, clothes, whatever ya got. and this is a good resource for that, don't get me wrong.

but the point of this thread is info on where YOU can donate YOUR airmiles to worthy causes...not where you can donate other stuff, and get paid off for donating by getting air miles for yourself.

This is about folks like me, unemployed and with no resources, but wanting to help in any way possible...and it hit me that I could donate my airmiles. It wasn't as if I was using them, anyway...and if it gets one doctor IN...or one unlucky soul OUT of N.O. and surrounding areas of Miss and Ala....then I think it's a good thing.

Thanks to all who helped get this put on the Greatest Page, where hopefully more will see it...and realize that there is another way they can help!!

Hopefully, we can convince the powers at DU (EarlG, Skinner) to place this on the Home Page...or at least include it in links under Hurricane Disaster Relief Information And Resources...so that we can maximize this effort.

And please...anyone with additional info, for other air-miles programs that are assisting, PLEASE POST THAT INFO IN THIS THREAD!!

What inspired me was an email I got saying if I donated cash or goods, I could GET 500 air-miles...and I thought, fuck...why can't I give my air-miles themselves to the cause?!!?

Dunno about the rest of you, but I don't need to be bribed into giving!! But that email inspired in me the idea to give away my airmiles. Maybe Freepers need to be bribed, but I know my fellow DU'er's don't!!

I was going to use my air miles to fly into New Orleans later this year, as I really shouldn't be spending that kind of money on anything I don't need these days.

Now, I can give all my miles TO New Orleans, in a manner of speaking. Continental's link (provided upthread) lets me give them all to the American Red Cross. Granted, they're not specifically earmarked FOR the Hurricane Katrina effort, but I can hope that's how they're used.
