When the Levees break: reported 11:15 a.m MONDAY MORNING on WSDU
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 06:28 PM by bpilgrim

Never FORGET!

11:15 a.m.: Levee Breached At Industrial Canal

There's been a levee breach at an industrial canal in the Ninth Ward in St. Bernard Parish. When this occurs, water rises rapidly, so residents should be extra alert to the threat of rising water. There are reports of 8 feet of water spilled out because of the breach. There is also heavy street flooding throughout Orleans, St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes. A WDSU crew drove around the city and some streets look like flowing rivers. Also, earlier reports of an apartment collapse in Jefferson Parish are false. It was actually a house that collapsed. -- WDSU.com Web Staff

1. Actually, it was known the night prior
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 06:02 PM by dotcosm
I heard about the levee break at around 11pm (west coast) on CNN. It was known, and they should have been SCREAMING about it then, when there was still time and only ankle deep water.

Edit: OMG, you mean 11am MONDAY??? That's a full 12 hours earlier than I had heard it, and by 11pm they were STILL ignoring it!! wow this is so much worse than I though.

Document this! (well, we are)

10. yup
West Coaster here, i heard I believe it was the Vice President of Tulane, or somebody like that, forget..

Anyway, a lady said that she heard the levee broke, and she had water rising below her at 1 inch every 5 mins.

This was Sunday night, early Monday morning NO time.

Which means, when Bush woke up Monday morning, he should have known about this.

In fact, whatever time this happens a real president would have been woken up.

9. Earlier report, just tentative
same link.

"9:25 a.m.: East Jefferson Hospital Also Flooding
There are also reports of water on the lower floor of East Jefferson Hospital. The flooding may be related to unconfirmed reports of levee breaks along industrial canals in the area. -- WDSU.com Web Staff"

One wonders why it wasn't reported, and everybody breathed a sigh of relief after the storm passed. Is this overflow being confused with a break, or did all the local news/politicos overlook it for more than 12 hours?

13. I posted earlier that I distinctly recall reading reports from local TV
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 07:19 PM by Ms. Clio
by the early afternoon, and I spent the evening wondering why the cable news networks weren't reporting it, weren't carrying their affiliates' feeds live.

I almost posted about it, but I almost never start my own threads.

There were reports of waters rising and "hundreds of people on rooftops" while Nancy Grace was babbling about Aruba.

27. It's more like we have to change the time-line on this.
The accepted version that I've mostly heard is 'levee break late Monday night'.

It's looking like it wasn't long after the storm surge, which raises a bunch of different questions.

Unfortunately, the levee breech widened, and with it the evidence washed into NOLA.

For the record, between 2AM and 3AM (eastern) Tuesday morning, I heard that the 17th Street levee had been breached on CNN. The VP of Tulane University Hospital (a woman) was talking to Rick (??? last name unknown, big guy with deep radio voice) and she said that the police had confirmed to her that the 17th Street levee had been breached and the water was rising at the rate of 1" every five minutes.

Edited to add eastern so that timeline is clear.

On Sunday, as headlines report "Katrina Packing Wind of Nearly 175 Mph" and New Orleans is ordered to evacuate, Bush finally resurfaces in a taped appearance. He makes brief remarks about Katrina and then discusses Iraq. Transcript: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/08/20050828-1.html Later the White House issues one photo of Bush being briefed on Katrina.

Mon Aug-29-05

As the hurricane rages, Bush flies to Arizona for a "Conversation on Medicare." Upon landing, he presents John McCain with a birthday cake. He then flies to San Diego to spend the night at the luxury resort Hotel del Coronado, reportedly attending a fundraiser that night.

Tue Aug-30-05

As floodwaters inundate New Orleans and the Gulf Coast reels from the catastrophe, Bush speaks at a VJ-Day ceremony in San Diego. Afterwards singer Mark Wills presents him with a guitar. He then returns to Crawford for the night.

Wed Aug-31-05

Bush finally returns to Washington. AF1 flies over New Orleans so Bush can view the disaster. Back at the WH he makes his first official statement about the aftermath of Katrina.
