The usual talking heads are suddenly demanding answers about Katrina "response"- why now?

Do they feel guilty about not asking tough questions about Iraq?

Did they figure out that if they did ask tough questions about Iraq, maybe we wouldn't have gone?

Did they figure out that with no Iraq war, maybe the NG would have been ready to deploy in the South?

Have they figured out that they are just a little bit culpable in the murder of thousands of southerners?

They are getting an up close and personal taste of this tragedy. It is pretty hard to keep your mouth shut when you are throwing up.

I fell asleep last night, exhausted, with CNN on and this morning I was woken up by Solidad demanding real answers from Brown (FEMA) I think she was yelling.

6. Maybe they now understand Republican governance, up close

and personal? Maybe with 9/11, the lies about Iraq, the resulting quagmire....now this travesty has helped them reach the saturation point? Maybe they understand now how true incomptence, arrogance, and misplaced priorities are counter to our national interests?

9. I'll believe it when they challenge lies--ie, Sawyer and Bush

saying no one could predict levees; guy on MSNBC blaming the DEM gov and mayor, etc.

The press, to do a real job, must CHALLENGE false declarations with FACTS, not let the just slip by....

10. Something went on with the psyops officers usually stationed on news TV

No idea what it could be. My first guesses are:
1. initially redeployed to disaster management (their more benign functions are doing leaflet drops in disaster areas), leaving journalists to their own devices
2. live coverage on the field is not as intensely controlled and relies on orders being followed without a direct presence (not so likely because they can cut the broadcast from the studio)
3. defiance of the orders from the news studios due to strong reactions to the crisis
4. untimely absence (vacations?) of the psyops officers let the reporters run away with real news
5. the psyops officers themselves were miffed and let real news get through deliberately
6. orders to let real news go through were given for some reason
7. maybe there aren't really psyops officers out there and it's just a "conspiracy theory" (despite counterpunch et al uncovering it in the past)
