Maybe the real reason Tom Ridge quit as head of Homeland Security is that he knew that agency wouldn't be worth a shit in an actual emergency. Ridge told the press that he was returning to the private sector because he needed to pay his kids' college tuition. That seemed like a lame story at the time, and now there's an alternative explanation.
Nobody wanted the job after Ridge quit. It took Bush a long time to fill the vacancy - remember the Bernard Kerik embarrassment? Bush finally came up with the obscure Michael Chertoff. It looks as though Chertoff didn't mind being associated with a disaster, but Ridge might have wanted to maintain his reputation for another stint in politics. Imagine how poorly DHS would have performed if there had been a surprise attack. What a disgrace.

about * using the "terra alert colors" before the selection. He is a corporate pig. He was our governor and my congressman at one time. What a waste to humanity. He could have done so much.
