Oh dear.. my pastor's wife was parroting RW talking points
about the disaster resting on the shoulders of the governor and mayor. And then she started talking about how sinful the city is.. I was very glad that the conversation turned to something else. (It was me talking with 5 conservative evangelicals.. 3 of them family. I just wasn't up to setting them all straight beyond telling them to listen to the Mayor's phone interview...*frustrated sigh*

1. I would have got up and walked out on them..
I've seen too much on tv and have no patience any more with that attitude.

I got him to listen to the New Orleans mayor on the radio. that really shook him up.

How else are we going to get the truth out and stop this madness?

Put your personal discomfort aside and think of the BIG PICTURE.

12. I did dtraighten my husband out finally, but I couldn't get all of them
sorted out at once. I find they don't listen when they are in packs because they all jump on me at once....but one on one I can sometimes get through.

5. That's what you get for
believing in fairy tales! Common sense tells you this is wrong. Examine your belief system! Is your God that mean? If he is, I feel sorry for you.

6. My republican Mother relative is similarly delusional.
She's a nice lady, but as she was talking about the horror of the disaster, she was very quick to say that the blaming has to stop! It's not time to blame anyone, etc. I usually hear that from her and her husband whenever Bush or a republican screws up. They don't want to hear blame.... Oh, but if it was Clinton, can you imagine?

9. You are a strong woman, GPV
In normal times I could cope with the situation you described but right now I'm afraid I'd risk divorce and confront the Limbaugh Repub relatives if they started spinning the story.

The pastor's wife's view that it was such a sinful city doesn't surprise me. The French Quarter is all of NOLA to many conservative religious people, just like the Castro is all of SF to same. What can we do? Stereotypes are hard to break. Speaking of which, go finish that shore dinnah you people eat every night in Maine --that is, if you've dug the potatoes, picked the blueberries, and whatnot. ;)

11. I'd simply tell them
that Katrina was God's punishment for voting for Bush. Want proof? Ask them why is it the hurricanes always hit the RED states first.

That should keep them busy for long enough to exit stage left.

16. Actually I wanted to tell her that I do not believe in a God that visits
trauma and panic on His children but the whole thing happened So fast and then they were in the car and leaving. I didn't even have a chance to pull her aside.

i might email her later, though, because that really bothers me.

14. No blame to you. You did what you needed to.
But if it were me, they would have gotten an earful.

The time is past in this country for politeness with these people, relatives or not. (And yes, I have a racist, Republican grandmother and if she starts in on this shit next time she phones she's going to hear it from me, 86 years old or no.)

This shit has got to stop, and it needs to stop with us, at the ground level. Stop letting people go along with this.

more it it pisses me off.

I think when I am done blitzing the homeland security committee for the disaster of responding to the disaster.. I am going to have to blog on the religious response to this.

Koolaiders to be spewing their slime koolaid on the unsuspecting populace..

I was talking to a friend of mine at work who was being a customer in the co-op and she was asking about my sister's open heart surgery..I told her she was much better and that if she hadn't of had to have open heart surgery that she had put a deposit down on a condo time-share in New Orleans for the last of August and they would have been booked to come home on the 28th of August.

I told her about the Spanish mp that was stranded down there in New Orleans with her family..saying.."if the Spanish mp couldn't get out I don't think Cindy and her family would have made it out on a plane.

My friend's eyes got wide as saucers and she said.."They're saying on tv that the Federal Goverment isn't doing their job and not helping the People ..I said.."yeah, well" and then all Hell Broke Loose!

This woman was standing by the dairy case and turned around and faced us ..she had smoke coming out of her ears; FUMING..she spewed.."THE FEDERAL GOVERMENT IS NOT GOD!" "THEY CAN'T DO EVERYTHING!"

I said.."bush cut the money in New Orleans for re-inforcing the LEVEES! "AND I KNOW THEY'RE NOT GOD..JUST ABOUT THE FARTHEST THING FROM IT!

I did not hear one more peep outta her.

I don't feel bad because she interrupted my conversation and used The Tone! Her Bad!

I'm okay now but I was shaking and churning inside for quite awhile.

24. I had a right-wing co worker openly blaming the mayor today at
work for not doing anything. I said jesus fuc... christ Bob, the mayor has been screaming on TV SOS, and Bush ignored his pleas for help!! Instead your Vacationing War President decided to play golf one day, then strum on a damn guitar at a fund raiser, and even had time for a baseball game before deciding to end his vacation one day early to take care of business. Now here it is Friday and the son of a bith decides to go to New Orleans. Everybody in the break room went completly silent and Bob didn't say a damn word more!

25. I'm going to be in your shoes tomorrow GPV (more or less)
It's our annual family reunion woth the fundie side of the family, and I know the hurricane will come up, as well as the talking points about Cindy Sheehan, Iraq, etc.

We went at it for hours last year over the then upcoming elections. For the most part, I got them thinking, but as far as changing their votes, I can't say. The good thing is they must be an independent brand of fundies, because they can't stand Falwell or Robertson, and they at least respect what I say because of the research I do.

I'd rather talk baseball and do old movie dialogue all afternoon for shits n giggles, but should someone start spouting GOP BS within earshot, I'll be ready :D

Just hafta keep my Irish blood calm, and theirs as well ;)

with my husband. He could really hear the frustration in his voice.
