Local Radio saying that people expect too much from the Federal Government
They said that the Feds are doing the best that they can under the circumstances. They said "What if Rudy Guiliani said what the Mayor of New Orleans said?" I was so mad, I wanted to call them and ask them if the whole city of New York was shut down and ruined. I wanted to ask them if what happened in NY covered a 90,000 sq. ft. area? I wanted to ask them how could the Feds be so unprepared when they had a 2 day notice about this possibly happening. I wanted to ask them why the Tsunaumi victims were getting water and food in 2 days and the people in the U.S. are waiting 5 days and counting. Then I wanted to ask them how Bush's ass tasted since their lips seem to be permanently stuck to it.

8. The two events are not even comparable

for the reasons that have been pointed out. Yes there was a horrible loss of life on 9/11. The vast majority of NY city was still in tact, however, and the rest of the state wasn't even touched beyond emotionally. The survivors of the blast and those trying to aide in the rescue had homes and hotels to go to, and hospitals with electricty and there were plenty of places to get food and water.

They didn't have to live in squalor and third world conditions and the federal government Did respond right away on 9/11.

I don't mean to downplay 9/11. It was a tragedy and I am still so sorry for those who lost their loved ones in that horrific incident. The bottom line, however, is that the rest of the state and most of the rest of the city was in one piece. Yes all of us had grief, anger, and above all fear to deal with but at least we could go to our homes and have comforting things around us, and feel a modicum of safety, and the feeling that something was being done to help. These people In LA and MI don't have any of that.

What jerks those DJ's must be.

2. We had 4 hurricanes hit Florida last year. They have lots of practice.
There were tons of supplies, food, water, ice, etc within days. Pensacola got hit twice so far in the last year. That's 2 near-misses for NO. I believe there were several other hurricanes in the last 12 months that were near-misses too. And they were suprised?

4. You are correct that there is no comparison.
I wonder how much the people at the local radio station would expect from the government if they were victims.

The government is funded by the taxpayers of the U.S. People have a right to expect service from the government -- and expect it before they die of dehydration.

5. The only people who EXPECT too much from the gov't are the
people who get nothing. Those that already GET from the government and who are able to USE the government don't need to EXPECT!

6. Never has the phrase "bull shit" been more appropriate!
This is exactly the sickness that this country suffers from, that I wonder if we'll ever truly be cured. A just and decent society isn't free. The cost of recovering from not only this tragedy but this entire mess this country is in will be HIGH and we'll have to pay it, one way or the other. We could have taken a little pain along the way, instead we'll have a LOT of pain, for a long time.

7. Reminds me of what this
customer at work said to me and the person I was having a conversation with today.

She heard my friend say.."the tv is saying the Federal Government isn't getting the help to the victims that they need.

That's when she spun around and smoke was coming out of her ears and she shrieked.."THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT GOD"..THEY CAN'T DO EVERYTHING"

I said.."whoa..bush slashed the funding for the levees to send the money to Iraq AND I KNOW THEY'RE NOT GOD..JUST ABOUT THE FURTHEST THING FROM IT"

I didn't hear another peep outta her..and I was waiting.

She doesn't even know the Fury she unleased..I was shaking for about an hour afterwards.

10. I would be too...
I had to cut off a co-worker today (who is NOT a BushCo supporter, BTW) because he was far more concerned about the looting than the rescuing. He basically felt that because a few crackpots were shooting at helicopters that they somehow didn't deserve the help. I had to get away from this guy.

15. I went through something similar
A lady was saying that the Feds were doing the best that they could.

I replied that I heard one of the guardsmen, or police said something like "If this were a terrorist attack, we'd all be dead"

I then said what have the Feds been doing with all of the planning and money since 9/11?

I then asked that the Feds knew this was coming for days and they knew that there were many poor people with no place to evacuate to and no way to evacuate. Why didn't they do something BEFORE this happended.

I then said that the Feds were talking about around 5,000 people at the convention center, when the numbers were at least 3 times that amount. That the people were told to go there and then the Feds acted like they didn't know that there would be so many people there.

She didn't say another word about Katrina.

9. If we can get camps set up and provide food & water in
every other foreign land after a disaster, why the hell can't we do it here?

The US was the biggest aid after the tsunami, and we were there in a day!

They didn't do the best they could! They've done much better in lands 3,000 to 6,000 miles away!!!!

No Republicans, Freepers and assorted Bush enablers a Government is there to help its citizens not just to enrich Cheney/Haliburton, protect Ken Lay and support Walmart.

12. This wasn't a tornado or a surpise terrist attack...
This was a hurricane.
We've had them before, so they know what to expect.
They knew it was coming, so they knew when to expect it.
They knew where it was heading, so they knew where to go.
They knew how bad a cat 4-5 hurricane would be for NOLA!
They knew how bad it was the day that it happened, but they waited...

Monday...
Tuesday...
Wednesday...
Thursday...
and then FINALLY on Friday, Bush comes in like some fucking hero with relief supplies?

Obviously people expect too much from this Federal Government.

17. Protecting citizens in times of trouble is the LEAST we can expect. We PAY
for at least that much.

And if we can't expect that much, why are we paying billions for homeland security????

I guess your local radio is wrong. These things *are* within the responsibility of the federal government.

23. 911 was a cakewalk compared to Katrina.
So was the tsunami, in many ways. Both were well concentrated, with minimal effects outside a rather well-defined area. In NY, it was a small number of city blocks; the tsunami affected littorals, not many airports or main roads.

Some areas affected by the tsunami didn't get help for a couple of weeks.
