This was not a spur of the moment catastrophe that happened here. It hit Florida and then they said it would pick up speed and hit NO. The day before they were saying that it was category five and that it had 175 mph sustained winds. They knew well before that this was going to hit. I want all of us to ask the question as to what he did about it. Yes, yes, I hear you say that NO had it's own government but there is a government that supersedes that government. After all, it could hit NO and many other places - as it actually did.
In the days leading up to this, would it not make sense that a category five hurricane would cause an unimaginable amount of damage? If you had a true leader, for a president, wouldn't he be rounding up emergency supplies in surrounding areas or at the very least, have them standing by? If you did not do it yourself, wouldn't you be in touch with FEMA and RC to ask them to get everything arranged in preparation for a possible emergency?
Please do not pile this on the NO government since they can only do so much. In fact, the government that supersedes them took away funding which may have made them safer. They can only do so much when all money is diverted to a truly important cause such as democracy in Iraq.
I do not think that GW is responsible for the hurricane. That is ludicrous. I do think he is responsible for what happened after the hurricane. We had a major disaster many years ago on the date of 9/11. The 9/11 event was of such epic proportions that we even made a new agency (Homeland Security) to help us deal with any threats. We saw the suffering of our people and what being unprepared could do.
Even if New Orleans had not been hit by a hurricane, it is below sea level and only protected by levees. A terrorist very well could have planted bombs at the levees and caused as much, if not more, flooding. All scenarios have to be considered. If that had happened, how much worse would this have been? This time we had the warning of a couple of days, with a terrorist attack we would have had no warning at all and we would not have had the benefit of "being prepared".
Think about this for a moment. Sit there and think what if a terrorist attack happened in your town. What if there was a major catastrophe? No matter how I feel about this government, I had assumed that at this point we would always have something in the wings to IMMEDIATELY deal with a situation of epic proportions. How safe do you feel? How well and quickly will you be helped if something happens in your area - even if there is advanced warning?
How do you feel about living in a country where disasters happen and help does not arrive for days? I remember how relieved I was when I saw survivors in NO. I was so happy they managed to get to the dome and they would now be safe. Imagine how they felt. I bet they were jubilant that they were still alive. How many of them survived the storm only to be killed by our "leader's" lack of leading capabilities?
The only reason they say not to point fingers, right now, is that they know where the fingers will be pointed. When you try to point fingers later they will say it is old news and now we must look forward at how to best prepare for disasters that may happen in the future. I say they have had several years to prepare for a possible disaster and I have seen them at what they call their best. Our country can not stand much more of their best. The people of NO deserve better than that and so does our country.
