Jabbar Gibson National Hero! Stole A Bus And Saved 70! LETS ROLL!!!
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 09:40 PM by DistressedAmerican
On Fox Right now!

This kid stole a school bus and saves about 100 folks that needed to get out by driving them all to the Houston AstroDome! Never drove a bus in his life.

"I had to do what was right for me."

He is a hero! He should get a parade!

Jabbar Gibson's first time behind the wheel of a school bus was spent transporting dozens of people from New Orleans to the Reliant Astrodome.

The first busload of New Orleans refugees to reach the Reliant Astrodome overnight was a group of people who commandeered a school bus in the city ravaged by Hurricane Katrina and drove to Houston looking for shelter.

Jabbar Gibson, 20, said police in New Orleans told him and others to take the school bus and try to get out of the flooded city.

Gibson drove the bus from the flooded Crescent City, picking up stranded people, some of them infants, along the way. Some of those on board had been in the Superdome, among those who were supposed to be evacuated to Houston on more than 400 buses Wednesday and today. They couldn't wait.

The group of mostly teenagers and young adults pooled what little money they had to buy diapers for the babies and fuel for the bus.

76. I thought they said he stole the bus?
They said he carjacked that bus. I didn't know one of the cops told him he could take the bus out of N.O.

I also heard he wouldn't be charged with anything. Good move on his part.

9. He can't be more than 20.
Greta is interviewing him in Houston. He went into a lot and took a school bus - just decided to take his chances. He picked up 70 people along the side of the road and they pooled money for fuel. I think it's the bus that showed up before all the other and they eventually let them into the Astrodome.

They weren't ready yet, and they made the bus wait outside the Astrodome.

The theory back then was that the driver or passengers must have known "shortcuts" to get to Houston so quickly. Looks like they took the initiative and made a head start.

Good for them!

10. Added Some Details To The OP.
He went to a school bus parking lot and got into the destroyed building and found the keys. He matched a set up to a bus and started making the rounds picking folks up off the street.

Drove them 350 miles. Made 3 stops to fuel up.

What a guy!

11. Hmmmm
Let me just wrap my head around this for a minute--okay?

Several white men take down a hijacker, causing a plane to crash and kill a couple hundred people, but saving untold lives.
They are heroes. They are revered. T-shirts are made in their honor.

BUT

A young black man commandeers a bus. Doesn't hurt a soul, but saves 100 lives is a criminal?

Maybe in Bush's America...but in my America, that young man is a hero!

But it took real leadership to do this. Leadership is what is difficult.

My hat is off to this young man. Truly a hero.

72. Talk of Arresting Him Sounds Like Some 1950's Morality Play
It's like a black man saving a drowning white woman's life in Mississippi, then getting arrested and lynched for giving her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

77. FANTASTIC! He's a hero!!! Contrast with Bush is so damning.
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 01:25 AM by Nothing Without Hope
Did you see this great cartoon by our own Gatorboy, based (he says) on suggestions by Dotcosm. So young, and Jabbar is a bigger man than * will EVER be.

VERY SIGNIFICANT: Police told him to go ahead and take the bus and get the people out. That says (a) that they know the people won't be moved by the Feds and (b) they are pulling for the right thing to do even if it is against the letter of the law.

THIS COUNTRY IS COMING TOGETHER despite the corrupt, criminally negligent (at the least) feds.

80. What a truly beautiful human being.
This young man is a hero, and I hope that people will see in him the compassion and humanity that is lacking in the pPresident. I wish we could kick Smirk out, and put Jabbar in office instead.

82. Another kick for Jabbar Gibson!
What a hero!

That's what real human beings do in a crisis. They work together to save each other.
What a glaring contrast to this SUBHUMAN administration and most of Congress.

85. Hey! GREAT one, man!
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 03:45 AM by dxstone
Hard to find positive stories in all of this...
I don't know if I'd dub the kid a major hero though; I can state pretty confidently that I'd do the same if I were in his shoes... and I know a LOT of other people who would as well...
Not to diminish his achievement, not at all. I'm just saying that this is the sort of common heroism that MOST people of good will are capable of when their back is to the wall. Personally, I'm a big believer in the nobility of man; the potential is always there, just as our negative capacity.
So I raise my glass in toast,
:toast:
and say Bravo to this intrepid young man! TRULY a wonderful tale!
Just let them TRY to arrest him... THAT would be ANOTHER very big mistake...
d
ps: Just sickening, what's goin' on down there... the film of Geraldo and Shepard Smith, and audio of Mayor Nagin's impassioned plea for action, both available at
http://www.crooksandliars.com
are particularly compelling and heart-rending items I must recommend to all who haven't yet seen 'em...
Good god, this magnificent horror, this betrayal and dereliction of duty at the highest levels, it's all so hard to weather even from here... I can't really begin to imagine what it must be like for those still clinging to survival there.
Goddamn these cowardly vermin unelected 'leaders' of ours...
I can see very clearly what their main goal is here.
They're fomenting racial mistrust and hatred. They are breeding a new civil war, a race-war... they've ALREADY got people arguing about whether there really IS a racial component to this immense neglect, or if it's just "those people" COMPLAINING again (I already know of idiots in white America who seem to think that black people are gonna clean up on Hurricane Katrina, it's just gonna be a tremendous windfall for blacks generally) (!!?!), and all that should be good for starters at least. For the past 25 years they've spent a great deal of time and effort dividing we the common people on every level imaginable (remember, many people voted for Butch last year because he promised to end the horrible threat of GAY MARRIAGE in AMERICA, Land of the FREE of all places!), but the racial card is the main one they've chosen to carry their horrifying plan forward.
There can be no feigned explanation of incompetence. NO ONE is this incompetent.
It's like 9/11 all over again.
When people finally DO wake up, will everyone just start firing their guns at anything that moves?
Black against white. Gay against straight. Young vs. old. Middle-class vs. poor. Men vs. women. Religious zealots vs. scientists and mathematicians; the ignorant vs. the educated. Christians vs. Jews vs. Muslims vs. Buddhists vs. Trappists vs. pagans vs. goths vs. druids vs. heathens vs. atheists vs. agnostics. Hare Krishnas vs. the Amish. Warheads vs. peaceniks. Classical vs. classic rock. Pimps vs. hos.
The Age-Old Conflict: The Idiots vs. the Imbeciles, each trying to prove themselves smarter than the other, both failing miserably. Endless struggle, fresh blood spilt and the legacy of hatred and vendettas and the drive for endless cycles of revenge and renewal of that blood-hatred. Darkness weaving a tapestry of fear and savagery over the whole of this sadly now-benighted world.
It's scary. They're trying VERY HARD right now to divide us all, and keep us fighting each other, out of hatred or simple desperation and need to compete for ever-dwindling resources...
This is what I'm seeing.
How can we find a way to come together?
We HAVE to find a way to stand strong together, shoulder to shoulder, and take back what is ours.
If we don't, I don't see how we can EVER stop this madness.
d
ps: Great post, DA! K&N!
