I am convinced that the "snipers" were just people shooting guns
to attract attention in the hope of rescue or blowing out their own brains to put an end to their suffering. "Snipers" hit what they shoot at (remember D.C.?) By the way, when was the last time you though of that in the shitstorm that has been the 21st Century.

What are your thoughts?

1. One thought
most homeless people are mentally ill - not a few of them are that way due to PTSD from having been in Nam or Gulf War - maybe they just flipped out.

2. I don't know. But I saw enough NO police and rescue workers, as well as
survivors in hiding writing about it, to believe there was mayhem and people shooting, even at police and rescue workers.

4. I believe
It doesn't really matter who is shooting at you. It is highly distracting.

6. I don't disagree with the mayhem part, but was anyone hit by a
sniper? The only verified shootings of police, resuce workers or military I read about were close range things, a looter shooting a cop and a soldier shot while struggling with someone trying to take his gun. Nobody shot from a distance by an unseen shooter.

3. I would agree with you. many people in those neighborhoods own guns
to protect themselves from crime. they could easily be on roofs and shooting to attract attention. good point.

this thing is about:

a)horrible natural disaster

b)inept and failed response from FEDERAL gov.

c)overt and latent racism and at least racial stereotyping.

5. desperation after so long without food and water
I think that's what a lot of it was. If I had to fire a gun into the air to save my family, you bet I'd do it.

I also think there has to be some mental degradation after being stranded like that for so long with little to no food or water.

They are desperate and don't want to die. Can you imagine how it would feel if you were stranded like that and see helicopters flying by with other survivors but they passed you buy?

I can understand every one of these scenarios.

7. most likely there were such incidents

out of, what, a hundred thousand people... in a desperate situation, with absolutely no social structure left, what the fuck do you expect?

and the next time i hear some asshole compare this to "9-11" i'm going to fucking scream loud enough to make the make the neighbors call the cops. they're both horrible fucking tragedies, but the situations are VASTLY FUCKING DIFFERENT. the subtext of this bullshit is "white people pull together, black people loot." it's fucking bullshit, and if we bothered to look at our own history we'd fucking KNOW it was bullshit. but that didn't stop me from hearing it, in one form or another, a thousand fucking times today.

14. White people get together, form a group including a lawyer or
prominent citizen, take a vote and decide that it is okay to break into a store due to exigent circumstances.

I actually heard today of a request for legal authority for the proposition that doctors and nurses have the right to go to the head of the line at gas stations.

9. I read about group homes abandoned
in NOLA, group homes where 10 or 15 mentally disabled people live with an attendant, were abandoned by the attendants. There are many people roaming the streets, without medication or supervision, paranoid people, schizophrenic people. People who are unable to cope without structure and a orderly society. Take that away and they lose it.

10. How can you know the difference?
The only way to be sure that they are shooting at YOU is to get shot.

Prudence dictates that you assume gunfire in your vicinity is dangerous to your livihood.

12. Snipers hit what they shoot at. Nuts with guns shoot at
helicopters and miss.

13. I saw a segment on CNN
Where guns where being fired on the police station at night. My guess is there is allot of hostility and they are taking it out on the police.

I feel for those police officers and I feel for the gunmen/thugs who feel that they have been left to die.

15. Under those conditions unless they had night vision scopes
the shooter were shooters, not snipers.

16. They were just thugs shooting at the building
They didn't hit anyone. I don't think their are any real snipers attacking the police just a bunch of pissed off stressed out scared thugs.
