112. They sounded like they were from Australia to me!!!!
Or New Zealand, or maybe South Africa.

They came for clothes, from 17 miles away. Had no electricity, but everything else was fine where they were at.

They probably wouldn't know southern cooking if a plate of it it hit them in the face--definitely not local.

24. Sure they could, but they needed two non-Caucasian Bushbots
in order to make the photo-op work properly. That would have been extremely difficult to do considering the circumstances. I thought this whole thing looked like a set-up when I saw it this afternoon on CNN.

I thought it unusual that their clothes were really clean after 5 days of being hurricane victims 'n all. Then I heard Malloy say they weren't from Biloxi. They kept saying clothes...lookin' for clothes, blivet** kept saying U want food 'n water? His script, in AF1, was different than their prompts on the ground.

I don't know what a Haitian accent sounds like, and I didn't hear their names, so to me they sounded Jamaican.

But if they have a French name, they could be Haitian.

He's holding them so lovingly, like a benevolent big brother or a kindly old uncle.

Such nice girls. Not too dark-skinned, nice hair styles, neatly-dressed and thin, and you better believe they haven't gone six days without showering or having anything to eat or a place to sleep, and I'll bet they didn't even smell like the toxic soup that the water's become. I'll bet they didn't even smell like raw sewage.

Now, how come he wasn't hugging someone who's been in the Dome or the Convention Center for the past five or six days?

23. Aaron Brown interviewed them
they said they've had water, ice and food the whole time. Got electricity back today. Said they came to Biloxi to look for clothing. Never said where they came FROM. Had no idea what the hell was happening, and started out the interview with a clearly rehearsed spiel about how great they feel now that Bush is there.

Hopefully someone, Crooks and Liars (?), will put a clip up.

These girls had heavy accents - Haitian maybe. I don't think they're Americans.

It sounds like it, but we need to get our ducks in a row before we run with this one.

I just went to a motel in NH - the help was black, but they spoke French. They may or may not have been Americans - certainly one's accent doesn't mean anything. My grandmother was American and she never spoke english. What difference does that make?

Edit: I hope I missed the sarcasm here - sorry if I did...

I saw those women on TV with Shrub and immediately thought:

a) they are were plants...not neccessarily brought in from a distance, but carefully chosen from the hundreds of people nearby

b) damn...they look good for going through hell. Everyone else I've seen is two steps short of filthy, and they look like they just came from the mall

c) the entire speech sounded a little contrived. Okay, a LOT contrived.

This would be funny if we weren't talking about real suffering. From this CNN video of Bush in Biloxi. Bush is talking to two sobbing African-American women who have lost their house, and a white guy:

Bush to women: "There's a Salvation Army center that I want to, that I'll tell you where it is, and they'll get you some help. I'm sorry.... They'll help you.....

Woman 1: "I came here looking for clothes..."

Bush: "They'll get you some clothes, at the Salvation Army center..."

Woman 1: "We don't have anything..."

Bush: "I understand.... Do you know where the center is, that I'm talking to you about?"

Guy with shades: "There's no center there, sir, it's a truck."

Bush: "There's trucks?"

Guy: "There's a school, a school about two miles away....."

Bush: "But isn't there a Salvation center down there?"

Guy: "No that's wiped out...."

Bush: "A temporary center? "

Guy: "No sir they've got a truck there, for food."

Bush: "That's what I'm saying, for food and water."

Bush turns to the sister who's been saying how she needs clothes.

Bush to sister: "You need food and water."

Damn, it reads like a Saturday Night Live skit.

53. A DU post earlier today cited a German reporter who was there who
was totally appalled because the whole thing was totally fake. There were no real victims there at all, no one to rescue, and yet they'd brought all these rescue teams there, just to create some video. Sorry I don't have the link.

From the sound of it, any media that were there would also have known the whole thing was fake--so did they report it with a straight face, or what?

German correspondent shocked about staged Biloxi events

The "Tagesschau" is the most popular German news program by far, aired at 8 p.m. The German US correspondents, usually very careful in criticizing the US government, were outraged.

Christina Adelhardt was in Biloxi the whole day. She said she couldn't believe what she saw: rescue teams, teams for searching bodies and their vehicles showed up, but without being necessary at all -- the area had been vacated for days.

She said: I'm shocked about the amount of destruction caused by Katrina. But the choreographed events I've seen here today shocked me the same, if not more.

http://www.tagesschau.de/sendungen/0,1196,SPM830_VID4700910_OIT_RESreal120_PLYinternal_NAV,00.html (in German)

What I don't know and am curious about is the extent to which U.S. media abetted the charade or at least allowed it to pass without comment. I've seen a post that one objected--but what about the others?

60. Transcript is available now. Here's part with snips
"BROWN: Before you met with the president today -- and our viewers are seeing that now -- before that, were you a little angry with the government and how the government had responded?

BRONWYNNE BASSIER, SURVIVOR: But, no, I wasn't angry at the situation, because I knew eventually they will eventually help us in some sort of way. And, like my sister said, he did reassure us that things were going to happen. And I can see that they are happening, because I am in Gautier. And every day, there's people giving us water and giving us ice and telling us that everything is going to be OK.

Like today, Pascagoula and Ocean Springs got electricity. And they said it's just a matter of hours before Gautier gets electricity, too.

BROWN: But -- so, the situation for you in Biloxi isn't comparable, is it, to the situation for the people in New Orleans.

Have you been able to follow that part of the story at all? Are you aware of what it's been like there?

B. BASSIER: Well, today, the actually -- the only reason why I came to Biloxi was because I need to get some clothes for my son and clothes for myself, because I don't have any clothes. And, you know, I just needed to see if I can salvage something down there."

106. I caught the bush encounter live and here's what was so annoying:
I saw this encounter live on one of the channels yesterday, mid-day (I've been flipping CNN, MSNBC, FOX so I don't know which one), and you could hear the audio. Obviously it was some kind of a set-up photo op, you could tell by the way it started.

The older woman did seem to be pointing out a place where her house was and she said she had lost everything, seemed flustered, and bush kept saying "THEY'RE going to help you" every time she said how bad things were...like he kept repeating it, almost like saying, 'go away, it's not MY job to rebuild your house"...and then he kept kissing the other one on the head, over and over, and kind of "holding" the kiss pose to make sure the cameras got a good picture, I guess. It just reeked of set-up and bush looked really clumsy and impersonal, like he was doing something he had to, and he had no empathy for the people. It was awkward, in a word.

When asked about comparing their situation with those in NO. Just like a politician she answered a question that was not asked ignoring the one that was aked.

And Aaron Brown dutifully moed on as if he actually got some substance from this converstion.

98. I made myself watch the whole photo op
because it was clear from the outset that it was staged. Whatever news channel I was on at the time didn't provide any voice-over from an anchor or reporter. They just let the scene play with audio so we could hear W's voice as well as the "survivors."

What I noticed, as usual, was the body language. George took great pains to EMBRACE first the younger girl, and he didn't let her get away from his arm for long minutes -- throughout the entire piece, in fact, I believe. I kept thinking, "They've told that young girl to hug him and HOLD ON like he was her daddy."

But he was clearly not at ease in such close contact with the dark-skinned girl. He made himself hold her and even kiss the top of her head I think, but then as he talked with the other sister, he let his hand slip from actually touching her and hang loosely on his arm draped across her shoulders. This is bodyspeak for "I'm touching you but I don't want to touch you."

He did the same thing when he finally embraced the sister as well. And I noticed how he kept looking *away* from their faces whenever they were replying to his questions. He would ask, "Do you know where the Salvation center is, down the street?" and as a sister replied, he looked off in the distance past her head -- once actually looking up into the SKY! -- and nodded and made what's called "affirming" sounds to her ... just positive-sounding murmurs to show he was listening attentively (when he really wasn't).

The older sister kept going on about not having clothes, and she reached down and held out the pant-leg of her shorts (which appeared to be quite clean, as others have pointed out). She said, "These are the ONLY clothes I have..." and was about to go on but George interrupted, saying, "Uh huh, well, they'll get you some clothes." He even said it with a bit of frustration in his voice, as if he was tired of hearing about the CLOTHES.

He also repeatedly muttered things that might not appear in a transcript -- I know because I used to transcribe real-life conversations. Little "uh-huhs" and "mmmms" and the like. Affirmatives that simply provide feedback to a speaker, usually to show one really is listening, to encourage him or her to continue.

What I saw in W's body language was a man who knew he HAD to get through an ordeal because it was the photo op that would be shown literally hundreds of times as his response to "the people who survived" this disaster. He had steeled himself for the few minutes of touching and being touched by folks he would not normally get that close to. He kept trying to look at them directly, even in the eye, but his instinct was to recoil and to look away. This innate tendency broke through repeatedly throughout the appearance.

I believe he was aware of the cameras every single moment. When he would drop his hand from the girls' bodies, leaving his arm across their shoulders, he seemed to become aware of it and would again put his hand against their bodies as if he knew that breaking of contact would be evident in the closeups.

Just thought I would describe what I saw as it happened. I also saw Aaron Brown's interview with the sisters later. I thought he tried to get them to reveal telling facts, but they seemed to me to be quite well drilled in how they should respond to questions. They seemed very light-hearted, though, even giggly at times as if they were flattered by the attention being paid to them. They very clearly were NOT behaving like people who had just been through hell for five days.

And Brown's NON-verbal responses were telling as well, when the camera came back to him. He was clearly skeptical of the girls' authenticity, but he didn't say it aloud. He made a face that said a LOT ... kind of rolling his eyes at one of the replies he got to his questions.

Finally, he seemed to realize he was getting only well rehearsed answers and would find further questioning to be futile, so he sort of sighed and made a droll comment as he often does, and moved on.

I thought he was walking a fine line. He did not want to appear to be probing or pushing for scandalous revelations from these girls in case they might be genuine. For obvious reasons, he couldn't be seen doing that. He had to be respectful and careful. But if you watched and listened closely, you could tell what HE really thought about those "victims."

As the response on this thread indicate, I believe people in the U.S. and around the world will see through the phoniness of the photo op. Unfortunately, most of the time we see this bit re-aired, it will be without the audio that came with it, so that the impression is quickly gained of Bush hugging victims, period. But I thought of at least a half-dozen satirical captions I could have put to the picture of George with his arms around the two dark-skinned young women, making faces as he always does that give his real feelings away.

I hope someone will be able to dig up the truth about the people presented to us as disaster survivors. I think I'll spend some time looking into it as best I can. This could be important as real evidence of his deceptive trickery for public consumption.

Also, I'm hearing just now on Fox from a doctor at Charity Hospital who is saying right out that they got a LOT OF *FALSE* REPORTS of the threats from looters that were supposedly endangering them so much and keeping the rescuers away. I've suspected from the outset that those "shots fired" at rescuers and relief workers are being greatly exaggerated, in order to provide a very convenient EXCUSE for the delay in providing a proper response to this dire situation on the ground all along the Gulf Coast. THIS could turn out to be extremely important too ... more STAGING. LIES.

~VV

It's hard to say whether or not the lady meant that she is in a shelter in Gautier and actually lived in Biloxi, or what. I will say that I just checked mapquest out of curiosity and saw that it takes about thirty minutes to get from Gautier to Biloxi on Hwy 90, which was destroyed in places by Katrina. I would imagine with all the damage, it would take longer to get from one to the other now, which implies that they rode in a car. So, how did these ladies even get into Biloxi? Does anybody know if shelters have some sort of transport service for people? Very confusing...

Real refugees (hell, real PEOPLE) in real 100-plus-degree weather have shiny faces. Look at the woman under Bush's left arm--her forehead is like a mirror. The woman under his left arm has no shine on her face at all.

Come on, Karl, I know you like these great pictures to prop up the littlest emperor, but this is ridiculous.

110. STEP ONE: Get Facts, STEP TWO: Contact Media
Everyone chill for a second. What are the facts from the transcript? Did they actually point at their home and then claim to live 17 miles away? What are the other inconsistencies? We need hard facts, even just a couple, and if it's clear that this is bullshit photo-opping, we need a DU alert for letter-writing and a call campaign to demand that the MSM expose this PR game.

126. Want to KNOW if it's fake? See how long it stays on the W.H. Web Site.
If they PULL it, you can BET YOUR ASS it's fake. Right NOW, they're milking it for all it's worth.

"President George W. Bush comforts Bronwynne Bassier, right, and her sister Kim after landing in Biloxi, Miss., Friday Sept. 2, 2005, as part of his tour of the Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast. Their family lost everything in the wake of the devastating storm. White House photo by Eric Draper"

127. From this article I got the impression she WAS FROM BILOXI
SOURCE

Later, he walked down a storm-damaged street in downtown Biloxi, Mississippi, and comforted a sobbing woman who told him, "I don't have anything."

The woman, Bronwynne Bassier, 23, and her sister Kim, 21, managed to escape the storm but her house was in ruins. She clutched a black plastic bag she hoped to use to collect some items from what was left of her home.

Now if she wasn't from Biloxi, why would she have a bag in her hands? Anyone notice how clean their sneekers are? I missed them on Aaron Brown. Were they wearing the same clothes they had on while snuggling with W?

See transcipt of their interview with Aaron Brown in post #60 above.

There are many questions about these women. I can't prove it (yet) but I am convinced they were planted props.

survivers when they walked away? No one else was allowed in to the photo shot. It was a closed set. No extras even.

When was the last time the Secret Service let anyone come up to the (p)Resident and put their hands all over him? This whole thing smacked of a photo-op. Maybe I'm just an old cynical bitch, but it all really smelled fake.

Also, maybe this has been addressed, but I've been away from the 24-hour news cycles and DU for the last few days: the timing of the whole thing (holding the cavalry until * arrived) and the fact that he went to Haley's state first and the most severely affected areas last, also made me sick. It was like "these people voted for me" and I need to help them first.

Lastly, the fact that Hastert couldn't show up to sign the appropriations bill because he had a fundraiser was unbelievable callous.

138. Good point. VERY closed set.
Reckon they thought we would believe the fake President's convoy was just driving along a road and spotted these three "stragglers" walking along?

Also in the appearance before cameras that W made at the airport coming in, when he was "briefed" by the New Orleans mayor and governor of Louisiana among others ... I read reports that those terrible scenes we have repeatedly viewed of overworked medical people helping the thousands of desperately, critically ill and injured patients coming in from hospitals in the area of New Orleans were just over Bush's shoulder! He was apparently carefully AVOIDING looking at or talking with them!

Man, I so wish some of the people used to stage phony photo ops for this sorry excuse for a "leader" would come out later and tell the TRUTH behind what we saw. Some have indicated they believe this will never happen; but in a disaster THIS HUGE, when our pretend-Prez is being seen with a number of people we're told are survivors, we can hope that maybe SOMEONE will have the courage to explain later what really happened.

It would be such a powerful story if that ever occurs ... the same persons we all remember from a widely played photo op, telling us how they were plucked from somewhere else and prepped, or even that they are really survivors of the disaster but they were told by the "President's men" to say certain things and NOT say other things.

But if this hope I have is disappointed, at least I do expect the total weight of ALL the evidence we are seeing every day to convict GWB of heinous behavior at the very least. Even if he never stands trial for dereliction of duty or any other actual charge like he should be forced to do, my aching heart is eased just a little bit as I realize the American PEOPLE are convicting him by the millions day after day, watching the total story unfold on their televisions and reading about it in the press. I really do NOT think he will be able to lie or trick his way out of this one in the end.

~VV

143. smurfygirl just posted more info on these two

"I have this incident recorded on the DVR. When Bush walks up to the girls, the shorter one immediately asks him "hows my family" Bush responds that they are fine...Taller one and Bush chit chat about someone by name. Clearly, the audio was not shown on FOX or MSNBC or C-Span or anywhere else I have watched this. I later watched this clip on CNN and this part was edited and you could no longer hear the audio. "

I'm pretty good at determining accents and would like to give it a try. Right now I'm speculating West Indies, educated in Australia or with one Australian/NZ parent?

On edit: Bronwynne for sure is an Australian girl's name.

...
"quick karl, find me some negro children to hug"

as if i did not know as soon as i saw it on the tv it was as staged as hell.

btw, bush was flanked by SS guards, you could see where they had their weapons bulging under their shirts. had any real person approached they would have been shot to death.
