I checked the forums at about 8:15, as soon as I saw the thread about the interview I recorded the BBC news in progress and every subsequent news broadcast for the next few hours. It just so happens that I started to record right in the middle of EarlG'S interview. So far the interview hasn't been replayed.
Here is the transcript from where the recording starts:
EG:...into that area, when people are literally dying on the streets of starvation, thirst, lack of medicine, it just doesn't make sense in America in the 21st century.
BBC: I've just done an interview with someone in the military saying that their reaction has been very swift, they have been in there very quickly in fact. What's your response to that?
EG: Oh, well, there is no doubt that the people that are working there; coast guard, national guard, military, are doing a fantastic job. You've seen the pictures of helicopters airlifting people off of roofs but the bigger question is; why if the can get the helicopters in there to airlift people from their homes, why can't they drop food and water for thousands of people who are trapped with no resources whatsoever?
BBC: That aid is beginning to arrive though isn't it?
EG: Uh, yes certainly but again I think people are wondering where the administration has been in all of this. I mean look, people elected the bush administration because they believe, they were led to believe, that the government would protect them from situations like this. On Monday, when the disaster happened george bush was eating cake at a senator's birthday party, he was playing the guitar at a photo-op with a country music singer. Just this week we find out condoleezza rice was buying shoes in New York and the vice president is nowhere to be seen. I think people are just thinking this is far too little too late for a disaster of this magnitude.
BBC: Many thanks for your thoughts.
