After all this can America finally acknowledge "I am my brother's keeper"?
That's the question that springs to mind. All this "me me me" shit has come to a head.

Tax cuts. Cutting back on infrastructure spending. Rising poverty.

Now we have disaster.

I really want to believe that the people of America are essentially good, although some, maybe most, have been led down the garden path by republicans.

Will this be enough to turn back the clock? And is our democratic leadership smart enough to seize the moment?

1. How dare you demand that the evangelical, born-again Christian right
follow the teachings of Jesus.

The next thing you'll do is quote Jesus' parable from Matthew 25:31-46 where the "Son of man" sends all the goats into "everlasting punishment" because they neglected the hungry, thirsty, naked, and sick. Surely you aren't suggesting that's happening in New Orleans? :sarcasm:

:toast:

3. It will take more than a hurricane.
Bush has created the conditions for a second Depression. That should open a few eyes. But I think the diehards will stay loyal to the corporatist/republicans to the bitter end.

4. I actually think that its remotely possible that this is a "tipping point"
that people will regain their senses, Bush will be totally discredited, Dems will win big in the mid-terms, and the public may actually absorb the reality that Bush is a pathetic puppet.

Probably I'm being over-optimistic.

5. the reason we're all so furious is because what is being done to . . .
those poor people in New Orleans is, quite literally, being done to all of us . . .

at some very primal level we all realize that we are all part of the same human race, and that what happens to one quite literally happens to all of us . . . regardless of our prejudices, in our deepest hearts we all KNOW that these are quite literally OUR brothers, OUR sisters, OUR mothers, fathers, children, babies, aunts, uncles, neices and nephews who are suffering . . . and we're feeling it at a gut level in a way that almost never happens these days . . . even right wing commentators like Cafferty and Scarborough are feeling this deeply, and responding accordingly . . .

when this is all over, our interdependence may be more strongly felt (and maybe even celebrated) than ever before . . . and this will be a good thing . . . that could lead to many other good things . . .
