Does your town have a disaster plan?

I moved from NJ to upstate NY in June. I have no idea if we have a plan. I am thinking if we have plan at all, it needs to be reexamined.

1. our town is already a disaster since Walmart destroyed the economy here..

2. I thought we did for earthquakes and especially for the nuclear

power plant. Now I am beginning to wonder. Thinking about it, when the last big earthquake struck, we were pretty much on our own.

3. This is embarrassing, but I'm not sure.

Before this, I was planning to not depend on the government (local or feds) for survival. Sadly, the premise for my plans has been fortified with all of this.

6. Up here, the major environmental threat is a massive

snow fall and below zero temps, for weeks at a time. I'm making my own plan to deal with such an event.

My partner and I were planning on moving back to Louisiana (somewhere north of Lake Pontchartrain) from here in Austin now that I'm done with school. Peak Oil is my main motivation; I'm a believer more than ever. I want some acreage, an off-the-grid home, a victory garden, etc etc.

9. It's farm country here.

Cows are the underlying economy, milk is the bedrock. From which comes cheese, and cream and a way of life.

Cows (dairy), chickens (eggs, organic fertilizer, pest control), and maybe a few goats (waste disposal, milk, lawn mowing)..

My partner grew up on a farm; I'm ready to learn.

And since my sister, her husband and my niece live here in town, I'm planning for four.

She's in school, he's an idiot, so I have to be ready for everybody to go.

PS: Where in upstate NY? I used to live in Rome. :-)

At least Vermont has the mindset to deal with a disaster.

12. That area used to have one -- I don't know how current it is

My husband's cousin at one point was involved in disaster planning -- and he would have been in charge at some point if anything major happened. That was a long time ago -- during the cold war period.

Now who knows if the plans are up to date -- there should be written plans and on file. Unless paranoid has taken over and the plans are now "secret" -- one never knows with the current bunch of lunatics in the white house.

But we know thats not true anymore unless your town is called Beverly Hills or Palm Springs.

11. Check with your local fire department

If there is a local disaster plan -- they would probably know.

Many local communities have taken the initiative and worked on a disaster plan. Also if you are living in a rural area fire districts might have mutual aid agreements. It is the first responders who would be first on the scene -- or expected to be there when a crisis occurs.

It is worth while to find out and if not -- find out WHY not.

We have learned from the fiasco in New Orleans that in an emergency or crisis we have to rely on each other.

Our area has one because my husband wrote the first one and other fire districts followed his example and then it went to a county wide level. I started worrying about this when I saw how there was no warning system nor way to coordinate efforts when Mt. St.Helens blew in 1980. We have weather systems with near hurricane force winds that knock down trees and this can effectively cut off communities from the the rest of the world.

What this means to be that if there were a REAL terrorist attack -- we are on our own. All funds seem to have been spent on and by the military -- none filtered down to the first responders. Which tells me that this government considers we the citizens as the enemy. It seems like the bushie gang is more interested in protecting a selected few from the masses.

My husband's family lives in upstate New York -- now I'm wondering if his family would know. I'm guessing that his brother would know -- since both brothers are very safety conscious and believe in community service.
