Canadian warships to sail to Louisiana
Three Canadian warships, a coast guard vessel and three Sea King helicopters will be sent to Louisiana on Tuesday with relief supplies for the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The Canadian Coast Guard Ship Sir William Alexander will sail along with the Canadian Navy vessels, HMCS Athabaskan, HMCS Ville De Quebec and HMCS Toronto.

Naval crews were busy loading gear on to the ships in Halifax Friday as 1,000 personnel prepared to head to waters off New Orleans.

Commodore Dean McFadden, who will command the deployment, said they were consulting with their American counterparts to determine what they will do during the expected month-long mission. He suggested duties would involve reconstruction, health care and humanitarian aid.

2. Let's just hope Bush doesn't tell them to turn around...
...since he's been turning down offers of foreign aid.

We know EXACTLY who's dissing us. It's NOT the folks at DU. It's NOT our friends in the blue states. On a more personal note, it's NOT my close friends in San Francisco. It's NOT my friends in New York or Los Angeles, or my VERY close buds in Seattle, with whom I'll be attending Bumbershoot with this weekend...

Dissing us is actually the ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT. "They hate us for our freedoms". We OWN that silly fucking line now, and we know EXACTLY what it means. (And it's an embarassing line to begin with, I might add...)

Thanx, Mr. Bush.

17. We're not "dissed by the country"
We're dissed by that country's government, not the citizens. There's miles of difference there. I don't look at it as helping the gov't of the USA, I look at it as helping fellow human beings.

5. Thank you Canada...
Wonderful, amazing citizens of the world that you are.

I have no doubt that if we "Mericans" need help for more than an expected month-long mission, you will stay and help us out. You proved this during our crisis in September 2001.

After all, we share the same continent, even though our language might be a bit different.

Thank you, from the bottom of this American's heart.

8. Dear Canada:
Since our shit-for-brains government is totally incompetent and grossly corrupt... would you mind terribly using those warships for the purpose they were built and JUST TAKE US.

Really... takeover. I personally surrender!

11. If they don't accept Canada's help, I think FEMA's patrols there should be
....Completely destroyed. We can go in and overthrow the racist FEMA bastards there, so that Canada's medical supplies can get in and save the poor people who have dysenterry.

There's so many horrible diseases there now its SICK!!!!!! They need hospital relief and medicines plus food, not quarantines!!!!

I hope our wretched government will let more of the countries that have offered much needed supplies and expertise in to help. It is clear that we need all the help we can get.

I am just so glad we are finally allowed to help, it has been awful knowing we were willing and able yet were not being allowed, I know I felt totally helpless.

20. Also looking at bringing victims of the hurricane to Canada
From The Globe & Mail:

Speaking in Edmonton, Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan said Ottawa is looking at offers to bring victims of the hurricane to Canada temporarily. She said Canadians have been moved by images of homeless people wandering abandoned freeways in New Orleans, carrying their possessions in garbage cans.

"People here in Canada, especially in Atlantic Canada because of that Acadian connection, felt that 'well, maybe we could take some of these people in, especially the children. We could offer them a place of temporary refuge,'" McLellan said. "That is something we've indicated we'll take a look at and will talk to our American colleagues about."

P.E.I. Premier Pat Binns has offered to help co-ordinate the effort to possibly provide shelter. "Each of us can do a little bit," Binns said in a letter to the U.S. ambassador.
