We don't "envy your freedoms", Mr Bush : no, you fill us with disgust -
God preserve us, in the rest of the world, from "American values".

Sorry, I know that there are decent Americans, but like BILLIONS of other people on this planet having to stand by helplessly as babies and adults died, while the Bush administration did NOT ONE THING for five days - I will never, never forget or forgive this atrocity.

1. here we go, more Yankee-bashing
American values are just fine, thank you very much. It's American values coming in and taking care of those people when our fake President wouldn't. Your remarks remind me of my bigoted uncle and his "oh, I know there are some nice black people" commentaries - MOST Americans are like the people huddling in the streets.

ANYONE who judges others on the basis of skin color or ethnicity is a bigot, pure and simple. You need someone to look down on, so in your little lofty corner of the world, you've chosen us. Guess what? After these monsters eat us alive, they're coming after you. You think your system will protect you? Think again. They took over ours, too.

George Bush is a tool of multinational companies. He's a corporate whore. He has taken over our country and nearly destroyed it.

I am an American and love my country - still.

BTW, if we're such worthless people, why is it you feel sorry for the people huddling in the streets? They're just like the majority of Americans - in the street or on the edge of it. Shouldn't you just hate them, too?

5. Benbow adressed "Mr. Bush". Read again.
Nowhere did he/she say you were "worthless people". Come off it.

7. how did this address Bush?
>God preserve us, in the rest of the world, from "American values".

He attacked American values, not Bush's values. Bush does NOT equal America. We didn't even ELECT the monster. And while we've suffered under his regime for five years, has any world leader seen fit to challenge the results of those non-elections? No.

There is plenty of guilt on all sides of these issues.

>Sorry, I know that there are decent Americans

This suggests that they are the minority - WE are the majority - 1% of the population controls 90% of the money. MAYBE one day our cousins across the pond will figure that out.

They don't give a damn about any of us, but it's OUR country, not theirs.

9. When the German Nazis went rampagiung all over the world
I doubt very, VERY much that Americans said: "Oh, the Germans are wonderful people, they just have a shitty government right now." PLEASE. Your country acts internationally. Right now it has attacked and is occupying Iraq where people die on a daily basis. It's a bit much to ask that the rest of the world carefully phrases it's sentiments when it comes to that everytime they mention it. "Of course the Americans are wonderful people but their government unfortunately has attacked Iraq" (totally without any soldiers of course which after all are only following orders - a way of thinking that was, once and for all, totally debunked in the Nurmeberg trials).

What the original poster is saying - no more, no less - is: He/she will never forgive Bush for what he did/didn't do in Ne Orleans. Neither will I. I've been crying for those poor Americans in LA. Take your sentiments elsewhere. Attack Bush.

12. so because we were bigots, it's okay for you to be a bigot?
I've gone on and on about the quite complicity of the US in what happened in Nazi Germany. Don't put words in my mouth. Most rational people see the difference between the German people, its culture and the Nazi presence. I am merely suggesting you take the same considered approach and see the difference between the Bush NeoCons and the actual American people.

The soldiers in Iraq are merely doing what they were directed to do. THEY don't have a government that gives them health care as you do (oh, that's right, they can't afford it for us, because our government is too busy guarding the world and propping up foreign currency) OR educational benefits, as Australia does to its people. WE get to flood the world with our largesse but there's not a nickel to spend at home.

When you attack Americans, you are attacking those "poor people in Louisiana" and all the other innocents across this country -- btw, most of the soldiers you sneer at come from this same poor southern population. Just as we were complicit in WWII, YOUR governments aid and abet George Bush and allow him to continue. And WE bear the brunt of it.

As I've said, if you must feel superior to someone, help yourself to me, but the vast majority of ordinary Americans (who have fought against George Bush) ARE the ones in the streets in Louisiana. Those are the people you are attacking.

13. I HAVE NOT ATTACKED AMERICANS and neither has
the original poster! Quite the contrary! WE ARE EXPRESSING HEARTFELT SYMPATHY WITH THE POOR VICTIMS OF THE FLOOD!

If I thought all Americans were criminals I wouldn't be here on DU among people whom I - in the majority - admire greatly for their intellect and compassion and civil courage! Now if you still don't believe us/can't understand us it's a hopeless case. If you're so set on arguing go and find yourself some freepers!

14. oy
Look, you keep attacking "Americans" and "America" - that is US, that's not Bush. That is my point. And when I call you on it, you start complaining about our soldiers, who are normal citizens and primarily poor people.

I'm sorry, but if you keep equating the US with Bush's Junta regime, I'll still disagree.

2. Agree - furthermore I have never been able to detect those "freedoms".
Compared to Europe the US seems to be remarkably unfree.

As to the hurricane: I will never, never ever forgive Fallujah. What happened/is happening in New Orleans is pretty much the same in my eyes.

6. I don't understand you. How is it bigotry when I say compared to Europe
you are remarkably unfree? You are, you know. We don't have five-year-olds in handcuffs. Yet.

But as you say above there will be a time when the monsters will be coming for us. I know this and I don't feel superior. What's happening in the US right now is of concern to the whole world. Which does not make me like American expansionism any better.

Trying to make it really clear: The first poster and I are expressing sympathy with the American people who have to suffer under Bush and his criminal neglect to help the victims of the hurricane. Being offended is totally uncalled for.

8. you seem to miss the point
You assume this problem exists because of Americans. This isn't solely an American problem...it has existed for a long time. Anyone who judges that someone is part of the problem solely because he/she is an American, is guilty of bigotry.

>American expansionism any better.

Americans have never been about expansionism... elitists have, certainly, but not Americans.

to swallow that. Americans have never been about expansionism? I seem to know the history of your country better than you.

11. and there we have your bigotry again
So much for this not being about my people - you've specifically said it is again.

I know the history of MY country and of YOUR continent (my people came from there...at least 4/5s of them did) quite well. If you knew your own history, you would know you are in no place to hold yourself as superior over any other culture, certainly mine. Our history is a collective one - the US and Europe. We have committed the same sins together. We are ALL in this together, whether you like it or not.

Right now we're being held hostage by a global threat. You're only now having your own freedoms stripped away, by the distant music of some vision of a "new Europe". Be careful - they used to bottle that as "Morning in America". It has blown up on us already.

15. No, YOU'RE missing the point
Benbow WASN'T attacking Americans. "American values" is one of your glorious leader's little catchphrases, one of his soundbites. It's one of the things he claims he intends to force on the rest of the world, along with Freedom and Democracy and other things which are nothing but empty words to him. It was an attack on Bush, not on the millions of Americans who really embody "American values". You need to take a deep breath and stand back from this one. When the rest of the world is offering help and your government turns it down you need to ask yourself if those poor people in NO would be so particular about where the help came from when their own president, so proudly full of what he sees as "American values", has left them to die.

If you're looking for enemies, you're looking in the wrong place here in DU.

17. "American values" existed before Bush coopted the phrase
Look, I can understand that you guys are angry - your anger toward Americans is quite obvious in your phrasing but entirely misplaced imo. He is NOT "my glorious leader" - I despise and detest the monster. No one voted for him - ever. If you want to help the "poor people in NO", then have some sympathy for the rest of the poor and middle class Americans who suffer under his regime every day in many, many ways. New Orleans/Biloxi/Mobile are just highly visible examples of what has been going on in this country for five years and not a single international leader has decried it.

Not only do we have to deal with Mr Bush, we must also face rampant anti-Americanism caused by Mr. Bush and his ilk. There is a definite bigotry which has cropped up against Americans. It already existed and now has grown far worse in Bush's wake. The point *I* am making is that Bush and "American values" are NOT the same thing. Bush is, in fact, the antithesis of "American values". I don't care what catchphrases he uses, but if someone throws around that phrase as if its meaningless simply because he uses it, I'm going to object.

YOUR leaders have propped him up and gone along with him, to the great detriment of millions of Americans. George Bush's peers are the other global power-wielders. He doesn't give a damn about any of us in this country.

I'm not looking for enemies or friends, I'm just expressing my anger at this regime AND at the bias which confronts Americans on a global scale coming from people who don't understand anything but a crude representation of our culture. I've been on DU a long time. I also have a sister and several friends still missing in New Orleans.

You can't help a people by attacking them and that's what you're doing when you demean "American values". WE are the Americans - BUSH is not.

His pathetic incompetence is captured only by his nasty greed, that of Bush. And the evil of the vice president is unimaginable...
