Most of the article is wonderful news but after the prison like atmosphere in NO I cringed when I read this:
Plumbers and electricians are working to convert the abandoned Gumbo jail in Chesterfield to an emergency shelter...

Most St. Louisans know this place. It's surrounded by fences with razor wire in a flood zone. Sure the levees they built after the '93 flood have kept the area safe but the irony is just too much right now.
I'm sorry but a stifling cynicism has overcome me. I've got hope but I'm not the same person I was a week ago. Neither are most of us, I know.
